Point and Shoots, what'cha like?

->> Hi all,
I'm heading out of town for vacation very soon and don't want to take my pro rig. So, I'm looking for a new point and shoot to take along. I'd love to buy a G10, but you know, the economy and all.
Anybody using something in the sub $200 range that they like? Bonus points if it does respectable video, and doesn't have an insanely long shutter lag (friggin' hate that).
Thanks in advance! |

->> Rent you a G10. http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/canon-powershot-g10
Or buy one and sell it as soon as you get back from vacation. I just picked one up before we spent a week and a half in Florida with the intent on selling it when we got back. The problem is, I fell in love with it. But I figured you pay ~$450 for it new and then sell it for $400, you've essentially rented it for $50. It's a nice little vacation camera and does some really good video. |

| ->> I carry a Canon SD800 and it's an excellent light, walk-around little camera. There's got to be a newer version in the SD line for around $200. |

->> You're right Jim, there is...I just got the Canon SD 790IS and it's fabulous. Great-looking file and nice video, even in low light. Has a cool b&w mode too, changes the entire scene to b&w in the LCD as you're shooting. Love it and the price was right, around $200.
And I hate to say it, but it's got more megapixels than some of the pro cameras that I use. |

->> The raw feature may be worth the cost of the G10.
You can always go towards a previous model. the G9 I am sure is deal now with all the factors in today's market.
I myself love getting the exposure right on with jpeg files but raw is just so sweet when exposure and post come together for the end result. |

->> Canon SD880 is a very nice purely P&S style camera thats quite small and light and most important for me, has a 28mm eqiv wide end of the zoom. (some of those 38mm eqiv drive me crazy trying to compose) Its a little over the $200 budget but worth the extra money if you ask me as its one of the most responsive P&S i've used
G10 is a very nice camera, however its not very pocketable. Its light and compact to travel with yes, but its not a throw in your pants pocket type camera, so I'm not sure if thats a factor.
Akin to the G10, the Ricoh GX100 could be worth looking at. I've got one of those as well and its a pretty cool litle camera that does fit in ones pocket. Not ultra small but light enough it wouldnt be a burden.
Some cool features it has are a RAW mode, 24mm-70mm f2.5-f4.4 zoom with stabilization, and full manual controls.
No fancy modes for fireworks, or sunsets etc. No pink alumninum colors, just black and not even with a pretty chrome accent. Its a photographers p&s if you will.
Probably can find one under $300 these days as theres a new GX200 out, which really didnt change anything but up the mp from 10 to 12 |

| ->> Take a look at the Fuji F100fd. There is a $100 rebate on it right now making it less than $200. It seems to get pretty good reviews and looks like great image quality, even at higher ISOs. And it easily fits into any pocket. I may pick it up myself to replace my awful Canon SD850. |

Worth it though IMO. |

->> I have an SD 800IS and it generally works great. Limited in the overriding auto is a pain at times. I used to have an S70 that you could shoot in raw, manual focus (although time consuming) and manual exposure. Loved all that, but for a pocket camera the SD 800 is great.
Should you buy wit the plan of selling later, I bought a 70-200 f4 to carry on a trip once with the intention of selling it when I got back. Never sold it, I love the lens and use it instead of the 2.8 version when the light allows. |
