Holiday Deals?

->> A "Fortune" article today cited the discounts that Apple is offering this season as a sign of the times. Thought I'd share the following, and maybe open the thread up for others to post deals they've come across that might help members and readers to stimulate the economy (or treat themselves to a new toy)?

"By Wednesday morning, the white MacBook that still lists for $999 on the Apple Store was selling for $899.99 at BestBuy, $899.95 at B&H Photo, $899.00 at Amazon and $868.99 at Club Mac and Mac Mall.

Apple store managers, meanwhile, are offering to match any advertised price — a policy they quietly followed in the past but now openly acknowledge."

->> PJ - The one Bert linked to appears to be the original Extreme III and not the newer, faster UDMA-enabled Extreme III (you can still find both for sale at the same price at a lot of places). While the first stock image is of the new version, the "customer images" of the card show that it is the older version.

I've tested both, and the new UDMA version is faster both in terms of download speed (in a UDMA reader) and shooting speed (UDMA camera).

->> One word of caution regarding the SanDisk rebate: keep copies of everything you send them, INCLUDING the UPC labels. I recently sumitted for a rebate (Visa card actually) on two 8 gb cards and received the dreaded postcard from the rebate company: Rebate denied, failure to submit required UPC labels.

I called the number on the card to complain that I HAD sumitted the UPC labels and after some "run-around" and the "...I'll have to talk to my supervisor" speel, they agreed to send my rebate. (we're talking $100 here, not a few dollars) Hopefully, the rebate credit card will show up in the mail shortly.

This is the same sort of thing that used to happen with Canon rebates and until Canon realized they were not making friends, even if they were saving a few bucks by employing this rebate firm. It also helped that several states-attorney-generals threatened an investigation after receiving numerous complaints.

Let the buyer beware when you have to send in anything to get a rebate and again, be sure to keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them.

Is there really a difference in newer and older Extreme 3s? I thought the cards weren't UDMA until the Extreme 4s. Am I wrong? Is there a reputable comparison somewhere out there?

Sorry to hear you don't think I'm reputable. :)

Galbraith's site is good, and originally UDMA was reserved for the Extreme IV / Ducati series. But the new Extreme III ("30 MB/sec") are also UDMA-capable and quite fast, though not up to Extreme IV speeds.

For a disreputable comparison, see:

->> How about 30% off just about anything at Ebay?
Go to live.com and sign up for an account. It's not some scam site, it's Microsoft's search engine/google wannabe site.
Next search for something on live.com, i've had good luck with "ps3" what you search for does matter.
The first hit will be an ad for ebay with a live search cashback link. Click on that and you're taken to ebay.

At the top of the ebay page is a green graphic that says "Microsoft Cashback". Currently it's 30%.

Now go shopping. You don't have to buy a Playstation 3. Search for whatever. The catch is you have to do "buy it now", and pay for it right then with paypal. Make sure you have that green banner at the top when you pick the item. When you do that you get 30% off the price, up to $200, deposited in your live.com account. Used to you always had to wait 60 days to claim the money. Now, it seems kind of random, you get instant cash put in your paypal account.

This has actually skewed the price of thing on ebay up. $500 wal mart gift cards start at $570 for instance. Buy it and you get 30% or $171 off, so you're getting it for 400. The seller is making 14% gross, much less after ebay and paypal fees. Ahhh capitalism. Hmm the Chilis gift cards are still going for under face value, that should maybe tell Rebilas something.

Who's paying for all this? Microsoft, so you Apple folks be sure and buy lots of Mac accessories to help blow up the death star.

If this doesn't work for you, check the deal sites, they probably have a thread or 10 about it. It's been running at 30% off since black friday. Looks like overnight it stopped working completely, and then started again today. Typically it's much less than 30%, but every month or two they do this.
You're limited to 12 purchases at ebay on your account in a year, so you know, don't go blow it on, hmm i'm trying to think of something cheap in the world of photography, but coming up with nothing.

Here's the rules
http://pages.ebay.com/cashbackoffer/terms.html?_trksid=m37

Oh and for you folks that like to list your stuff for sale on here at way over what it typically sells used for, maybe try ebay, since right now anyway, people will get 30% off, making your stuff just a little high instead of laughable.
And finally, you can also do this at adorama and b&h but you only get a few percentage points off.

I wonder if I can use the rebate form on the 8GB cards I'm getting from Adorama. That would make each of the 8GB cards ~$12.00.

Gettin' cheaper by the minute!

I completed the purchase per the instructions here and on the information on ebay. (the important part is starting a "session" on the live.com engine)

It allowed me to apply the 10% off coupon (until midnight tonight: CHOLIDAYNOV2008) It took $85 off the $850 purchase price. I then got confirmation through my "live.com" account that I have $200 pending for transfer back into my PP account.

Looks like it worked as advertised. I'm a happy camper so far. Only thing that will make it better is getting money sooner than the advertised 60 days.

->> OK, not claiming that Ritz is a bit dodgy, but I'll outline my experience yesterday and you can make the call...

I planned to order the three CF 4GB deal from Ritz. Went to their site on 11/27, saw that it says "In Stock", placed my order and received confirmation. A few days pass, and on 12/02 I received this message from Ritz: "We just wanted to let you know that we have your order and have not forgotten you. We will ship the order as soon as the products are received from the manufacturer."

After reading the message in this thread above about it being sold out, I called the Ritz web order help number and spoke to someone at a call center who did a great job of "reading the script", informing me that they were, in fact, sold out and that my order would likely be canceled.

When I (slightly) snapped back that I ordered with their site saying "In Stock", pointed out the status email and also mentioned that, when I looked at my order status on their website it still stated "In Stock and Reserved". I asked to speak with a supervisor who shockingly read me the same "script" word-for-word (literally), and reiterated that I would not be getting the cards.

I then called the company's corporate number (949-442-0202), spoke with a supervisor in customer relations, outlining everything I explained above. And then I received shipment notification this morning.

Again, not saying anything seems a bit dodgy about that experience, but...

Nikon D700 ($200 cash back)
Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 ($200 cash back)
Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 ($200 cash back)
Nikon 105 f/2.8 micro (around $180 cash back)
Nikon grip (around $60 cash back)

Also picked up 2 laptops for my kids for christmas (found a few super deals on ebay and add on top of the the cash back.

I'm actually glad it over....keeps me from buying any more stuff.
