Think Tank Airport Security Bag Nightmare
John Middlebrook, Photographer
Basel | CH | Switzerland | Posted: 4:51 PM on 11.10.08
->> Well, maybe not a nightmare but got your attention. I was at an assignment out of the U.S. a few weeks ago and went to the press room to grab another lens. When I reached down to my Airport Security 2.0 roller I found that the zipper lock (3 digit) had decided not to let me back in. The bag was attached to the table with the cable, 1/2 my equipment was still in the bag and I was in a hurry. I panicked for a bit, not really sure what the answer would be. Since I was out of the U.S. I fired up Skype and called Think Tank's toll free number and was lucky enough to get a rep on the line. Dan was amazing and talked me off the cliff and explained how to break into my own bag. I could tell you how but I would have to kill you. After I found the tools needed I was back in business and swapping out the necessary equipment.

Later that evening I emailed Dan for a thank you and about 10 days later I received a replacement lock for the bag. A few minutes ago I unzipped here and there and with a Phillips head screwdriver I replaced the old, broken lock with the new one. I can't say enough for the customer service at Think Tank. Their equipment and service is the best in the business and will keep me coming back for more. I hope this doesn't happen to any of you in the future but if it does be rest assured that you are in good hands.

->> John, your experience does not surprise me.

When it comes to equipment manufactures Think Tank is the best hands down. They truly care about their customers and will go out of there way to make them happy. I've been a customer of there's since day one and will continue to do so.

->> I had the lock on my airport international lock me out of the bag in the first week I had it... I was in a mad rush like yourself and in the end had to break the lock to get in (laptop was inside, and I was in a rush so no time to make calls)

Also the wheels don't last to long on think tank bags, but they are very good at sending out replacements... I ended up using some inline skate wheels as they seem to last a lot longer...

->> I recently emailed ThinkTank asking for a recommendation on the right bag/pouch combo for an upcoming trip overseas trip which has some pretty specific gear and weight restrictions. Dan got back to me with a detailed list to cover everything I was bringing. He was a huge help.

Now if my purchase will only hurry up and arrive so I can test it out this week... ;)

->> And that's why after using my Modulus belt system of a year now, I just purchased an Airport Security yesterday. The clerk tried to show me some other brands but I told him "Thanks but no thanks." But he continued trying to give me the features and benefits of the other brands so I said, " Look, I'm buying a Think Tank, period. You can sell it to me right here, right now or I will leave and buy it through the internet when I get home." He sold me the bag.

->> I'm considering the ThinkTank Airport Security 2.0 or International. As well as the Urban Disguise 60 bag. For an upcoming US cross country trip.

Was considering the UD60 as my "laptop bag" and the AS / AI for my "gear". Either way, I want to travel with a 17" MBP... This will be my first EVER travel trip. So, any suggestions you guys may have, I am open to.

I've been reading as much as I can about air travel, and photographers. ThinkTanks site and PDFs on the subject are very helpful. I'm just wondering if the AS and UD60 might be too much? But I figure the UD60 would be an OK walk around bag too. The trip is a vacation type deal, not really work.

->> I must comment that I have that exact combination of the TT Airport International and UD60. It went to Fiji with me and beyond. It is not the 2.0 as that came out a short time after I got the version 1.0. The only thing I would do different is now that I am not going out of the country any more, is get the Airport Security. I need about an 1nch more room for my new stuff. O well....

As far as customer service, I had a wheel problem with for some reason my wheel bearings froze up or did something bad. I called them on this 800 number and bam they sent me at no charge a complete new wheel set. NO FREEKING CHARGE! THIS IS CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WHY IF I DO DECIDE ON ANOTHER BAG IT WILL BE THINK TANK!!!!!!
