Blog Questions

->> What are the pros and cons of having your blog hosted on your own server ( like worldpress.org software) verse having your blog with wordpress.com, blogger, blogspot, or typepad?

Paying for the service is fine by me if it will help with what I want it to do.

Do any of them allow you to make your images harder to just copy/drag and drop (maybe disable right click)?

Which option ( and for that matter, which blog tool) is best for search engine optimization? Meaning which way will help my company/ me come up towards the top of a google search with a term like "Miami Photographer"? Should that be in the name of the blog?

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.
Joshua

**Not sure about that one, but Blogger is owned by Google (blogspot is in the domain of their blogs)...can't hurt SEO.

**I honestly wouldn't worry myself with this. If its online, people can get it. PERIOD.

**I wouldn't say that Miami Photographer should be in the title, but it should be all over your blog...along with other key words that would relate to Miami, Photography, and the things you shoot (portraits, sports, etc.). Include links to Miami places that somehow relate to your work (venues, resorts). Be sure to keyword your images (tags). Link your blog to your website, your SS.com page, and any other online site/page that mentions you. In other words, interlink all your online presences to each other.

->> "your own server"

Do you mean a separate hosting account like a GoDaddy plan or are you looking to put a server in your home / office?

Most ISP's frown on having you setup a server from home. The downside is that unless you are VERY good at internet security and plan on putting up some kind of firewall between your blog server and the rest of the computers in your home network, you could wake up to find all of your 'other' machines wiped clean.

On a windows box {shift}+{print screen} is all anyone has to do to grab whatever is on the monitor at that moment in time.

Firefox allows anyone to harvest the image UNDER the cute transparent watermark layer in like 4 menu selections with no way to stopping them. trying to stop online image theft is a lost battle. If it's on a screen it's gone.

->> Eric,

I mean having it hosted. Thanks for that clarification.
As for the image theft. I know there is no real way of stopping it. I just want to make it harder for the average person.

->> Joshua,

I have my WordPress blog (
http://www.macklermedia.com/blog) hosted on anther server because you cannot "embed" flash files into WordPress blogs if you host it on WordPress.com. For image security, I embed PhotoShelter images and galleries into my blog (they're automatically watermarked, and can link back to e-commerce capabilities). The good people at Multimediashooter.com have a great tutorial on setting up a WordPress blog on another host:

->> I host my own site for a few reasons. The first is copyright. Blogger is owned by google, and in the fine print says that all photos hosted on blogger are available for google to use for free. I would stay away from that.

I also love how you can just type my web address and my blog appears. no .wordpress or anything like that.

Also, with your own hosted blog I can update and add galleries quite easily using phpslideshow and dropping folders into my ftp.

Overall, I feel that hosting your own site is much easier, user friendly, and just plain nice.

You can check out my blog to see what I mean.

It's dirt cheap and easy to use.
