->> I know a lot of photographers in the southeast knew Neil Brake both from working at Vandy and earlier at The Tuscaloosa News. Neil died this week leaving behind a wife and two kids. Neil gave me my first shot as a stringer in '95 here at the T'News. He'll be missed. Below is the link to his obit in the T'News and an article from Vanderbilt.

->> To the entire Brake family, I am heartbroken at your loss. Neil was a special guy whom I met first back when he was with the Birmingham News. I got to see him every year when the Vols would play Vandy and then often we'd have lunch when I had assignments in Nashville.
Even though he was an accomplished photographer in his own rite, he was constantly looking for ways to improve his skill set. He would always ask me to call him to assist on shoots that I did in Nashville for Sports Illustrated and many other publications. He had a dry sense of humor which I now attribute to his English background, which I had no idea about.

I will miss his smiling face, his quick sense of humor, and his self-effacing way. I am deeply saddened that his life was cut so short, especially for Brandi and Bradley. May Neil rest in peace, pain-free, and be welcomed into the heavenly banquet.

->> I really hate to hear about this - Neil was part of a group of freelance photographers in Atlanta in the late 80's and early 90's shooting news, and we had some great times for a while there. My heart goes out to his family.

Very sad,

->> Neil was always one of the friendliest guys and a great photographer. I remember him showing me where to shoot from at Vandy football and baseball practices. He would see me standing there, obviously lost, and come over to ask if I needed help.

Neil Brake will be greatly missed.

->> Hey to all...Neil was a good guy, terrific shooter. I looked forward to his occasional posts and his pictures of the month he would send out. In our workshop, he always had great energy and was helpful to others who had a bit less shooting experience than he did. We lost a good friend and a positive, talented colleague...

->> Vanderbilt University, Neil's last employer, has organized a memorial service for next week. They are asking for people to send remembrances of him. A memorial fund has also been started.
It is obvious Neil helped out a lot of photographers through the years. We can thank him by letting his family know how much he was appreciated.
