New Mac Book or Refurb Mac Book Pro
Scott Greenlee, Photographer, Student/Intern

->> Hi, I need some help on deciding my Christmas gift for myself. I'm looking for a laptop that I can use on deadline. Meaning I need this thing to be fast and last a while. I was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. Should I get a New Mac Book or a Refurbished Mac Book Pro? My biggest concern is that the Mac Book doesn't have Firewire and that the graphic card isn't fast enough to be loading large files. How big should my graphic card be for large files?

I am contemplating the switch to a mac from my samsung laptop. My biggest complaint with the samsung is how hot it gets and how noisy it is. Otherwise the usage is great just a couple of small complaints.

->> I picked up a refurbed MBP right after the new ones were announced 15" 2.4ghz for $1349 and got an extra 2 gb of RAM for $25 (after rebate, last check prices were down to $19). Looks brand new, no scratches or dead pixels. Only downside is that you don't get the really cool packaging you get with any new Apple product. But still couldn't be happier.

->> Go with the refurb and get the Apple Care coverage.

Both refurb and previous generation (same machine) matte screen MacBook Pros are available from Apple. These may be the last of the matte screen MBPs, as well as FireWire 400 connectivity,

->> Scott,
Before you buy the new MacBook, go into a store and look at the screen. I visited the Apple store yesterday to check out the screens on the new MacBook Pro.

The new screen is spectacular! It is sharp, the colors are vibrant and YOU COULD READ A NEWSPAPER IN THE REFLECTION!

I spoke to two Apple store employees and they are just as disappointed as I was. They suggested emailing Apple to complain and ask for the anti-glare screen.

I want to upgrade my MacBookPro, but the new glossy screens are unusable. With all the graphic artists anmd photographers who use Macs, I have to belive that if we bitch enough, Apple will do something.

Hope that helps.

Richard
