->> What a thriller of a game last night in Lubbock, TX. It looked the the Texas Tech Red Raiders were going to steamroll the Texas Longhorns. But, as a #1 team should, Texas came back in the fourth quarter and finally took the lead with 1:29 left in the game. Receiving the ball back Tech lead an amazing drive, and with a little luck from a freshman Texas player that couldn't keep the ball in his hands for an easy reception, #7 Tech beat #1 Texas with a TD with 1 second left in the game.
This is why I love NCAA football, especially in the south. It reminds me of the days I was at Texas A&M, shooting the Aggies.
So as I was watching the winning TD, I noticed a photographer just watching the whole play as it happened right in front of him. I know that sometimes we don't switch lenses fast enough or are using a wide angle shooting from the waste, but this guy was doing neither. Then I saw this photo that explains why;

Also, from the same game. I know Matthew McConaughey is a huge UT fan and is often on the sidelines what UT is at home, but apparently he travels with the team.

He was born in Texas, but did he go to school at UT? And when is the NCAA going to crack down on celebs on the sideline? It was bad enough when the crowd rushed the field with one second left, then did it again after the extra point, causing Tech to be penalized 30 yards on the kickoff, having to kick of to Texas with 1 second left from their own 7 yard line. That could have coast them the game. |

| ->> Will, that's what I thought too. Makes you wonder who he was shooting for? Obviously a Tech fan, but I wonder if his client would be a little mad that he didn't get the winning TD, b/c he was cheering! |

->> yes we were given new photo vest this week for the big game. They have the words Photo on the front with a Texas Tech Logo and the copy craft logo on the back.
As for the cheering people with cameras....they are a joke. they are clownshoes and i dont like them taking up space from people trying to do a job. |

->> Some of us are professionals, others are not. I can honestly say I've never outwardly cheered, jumping up and down, pumping fists, etc at any sporting event I've covered. Even when the team I like scores, I'm concentrating on doing my job, which is shooting the score and shooting any jube or dejection.
OT: the children still haven't adjusted to daylight savings time ending.
Zaxh, is there a big problem with "non-pro" shooter in Lubbuck?

->> Stew,
Having also covered the "big game" I can say that, yes there is a problem with "non-pro" shooters here in Lubbock. It also appears that the better Texas Tech does the more crowded things get. This is my first season covering Tech, so I can't tell you if it is this bad all the time. I can say that there are certain advantages to covering D3 football in regards to sideline space.
I didn't see any other photogs cheering at the game, but I kinda had my face crammed in a camera the whole time. I did however nail some guy in the knee with my elbow while I was switching cameras. The guy was standing behind me in a photo vest taking a movie with his point and shoot.
Do I think it is ridiculous that movie stars and FOTs take up space on the sidelines at sporting events? You bet I do. I wish I could change it, but I can't.
Do I find it interesting that hobbiest shooters only really like to shoot things that are exciting or take money away from deserving pros, sure. I mean really, if I were an engineer making $50k+ a year I bet I could have some killer gear too. That doesn't mean I should be allowed on the sidelines of a D1 football game.
When you are in a pressbox full of other media, they kick you out for cheering during a game, why should the sidelines be different?
What are these people doing with the photos they "shoot for the fun of it" anyway? Last time I checked Flickr wasn't a credited media outlet.
Mom at the high school game shooting for the scapbook, you have my blessing. Hobbiest shooter giving away $250 weddings, get your butt back in the office and stick to shooting the hummingbird feeder out your window with your D3 and 400 2.8.
Incidentally, I like to work on cars as a hobby, so I've purchased a hydrolic lift, a ton of Snap-On tools and decided to start offering repair services for a menial fee.
$25 brake job
$.18 oil change
$100 long-block engine rebuild
$15 valve job
and of course since it's my hobby, I'll buy all the parts you need to and eat those costs. No guarantees on the quality.
If you think I'm being a bit harsh then you are most-likely the guy who comes up to me and asks how you can get credentials from me for pro games. I didn't give you a straight answer last time, but if you still have questions please, re read my post. |
