Colin Powell Cites Platon Photo In Obama Endorsement
Melissa Lyttle, Photographer

->> In the days of buyouts, layoffs and negativity abound in our profession it's really nice to be reminded of the power of a still photograph.

President Bush's former Secretary of State Colin Powell was moved to endorse Barack Obama in part by a photo he saw in a magazine. On Meet The Press this morning, Powell said he was troubled by members of the Republican party falsely suggesting that Obama is a Muslim and therefore associated with terrorists:

"I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who were serving in Iraq and Afganistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was a mother in Arlington Cemetery, and she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death. He was 20 years old. And then at the very top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian Cross. It didn't have a Star of David. It had a crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. And he was an American."

The photo Powell references is #16 in this slideshow:

The video of Powell on Meet the Press is here... fast forward to 4:45 to hear the above passage.

->> I have a problem with what McCain said to that "supporter" (at his rally in Minnesota) who said she heard that Obama was "an Arab".

McCain's response was "No, ma'am. No, ma'am," McCain said. "He's a decent family man, a citizen who I just happen to have serious differences with on fundamental questions."

So, does this mean, if he (or anyone) is an Arab, they are not a decent family man? So, to be a decent man and citizen, you need to be a Christian???

Preston IMHO you missed the mark on this one, in more ways than one. I hope you understand my meaning, you obviously did not get McCain's.

->> Melissa, thanks for posting that story. I always love seeing examples of the power of photographs.

However, I have to say that after looking at the photo story, I can't help but think of some sort of sports drink advertisement or something. I see that type of toning everywhere these days for ads, and now that's all I can think of when I see that type of editing.

->> Former Secretary of State Colin Powell used a lot of color photography during his presentation at the United Nations asking for support for the US lead invasion of Iraq.

Nice to know he looks at the New Yorker, as well as those CIA photos he use to helped put Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan in harms way.

Perhaps if Power resigned instead of going to the UN, Khan might still be alive.

The power of photography is amazing, whether used for good or evil.

Thanks Melissa.

PS - if Senator Obama was an Arab-American, what difference does it make? Can we not look at religion or skin color, but instead of the content of a person's character? By the way, try to see or get a copy of Pete Souza's terrific book on Senator Obama. Talk about the power of photography!

From Audacity of Hope:'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'

I love to view good photography! That is what this site is for. Ideas to help us all grow. Some of the people on this site need to let their work talk for them more.

WE ALL MUST JUST GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!!!!!

->> ""I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." - NOT TRUE, this was one of those e-mail things that floated around.

This is a corruption of a quote from Obama's book The Audacity of Hope. It is from a section that talks about the concerns of immigrants who are American citizens.

Here is the accurate and more complete quote: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

So now I am OT but I cannot let this type of thing go by. I hope that this is the last of this stuff here.

->> Guys, I've been to Pakistan, which is a Muslim nation. Not Arab, but it was founded as a Muslim nation. My visit does not make me an expert on all things Muslim, but that said, from what I experienced visiting the Pakistani and Afghan people in and around Peshawar, I have no problem with the Muslim religion.

Not that Americans can walk the street in Peshawar anymore. But when I was there, America was look upon as a friend.

The winds shifted to an ugly direction a long time ago. All one has to do is look at the brilliant photo-journalism that comes from the world's 'trouble spots.' We have so much to learn from our brethren documenting the world without an American bias.

But if you don't want to listen to the voices that are 'foreign', get a copy of Ansel Adams "Manzanar". Wake up to the fact the as much as we love our country, it has done some terrible things that should not, and can not be ignored, if we want any sort of lasting peace.

If we can't treat our brothers and sisters with respect, how can we demand respect from the rest of the world. It's must be earned.

It is all in the photographic record if one truly wishes to be a student of photography.

I'll not take my Huh?, Off Topics, and Inappropriates, off air. Grin.
