Canon 70-200 "loose" sections HELP!!
Jim Pierce, Photographer
Waltham | MA | usa | Posted: 8:25 PM on 10.10.08
->> While I was shooting a game today I noticed my body with the 70-200 2.8 non IS was "loose" . I thought it was the connection to the camera but I can now see that it is all in the lense.

The white sections ARE loose. The white section close to the filter is loose as well as the white section that has the AF/MF switch and distance meter is as well. The gap between the white section that mounts to the camera and the one with 70-100 etc printed on it is fine.

It is working fine but is this something I need to worry about as I have a full day of Football tomorrow? I don't want this to fall apart running down the sideline.

Is this something I can fix or does it need to go to a repair shop?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jim

->> Jim,
Had the same thing happen to my IS version.
It needs sent in to Canon CPS or your local repair shop to be fixed. The screws that hold the mounts together on the inside have come loose.
This could be a huge problem from what i was told. Like the screw getting inside the glass elements and scratching the glass or even worse chipping the glass.
I had CPS do my repair.

->> Louis,

Not what I wanted to hear. However I was able to fix the outermost white section by pealing back the rubber ring and tightening two loose screws.

The section that has "70-200" printed on it and the outermost rubber ring section is still loose.

It just started today so hopefully it won't fall apart tomorrow. Or should I not bother taking a chance?

->> Jim,
I used mine for about 2 weeks before i sent it off it was fine i had to hold my section up with my hand in order to get it to focus. Mine was bad. I would use it
and then send it in right away.

->> We have the same problem with several of our 70-200s at the newspaper. It's a constant battle to keep up with the tightening of screws, but that seems to get the job done. We haven't had one fall apart in our hands yet... knock on wood.

->> Mine did the same thing. Be careful "peeling back the rubber ring". If it's not reinstalled properly you risk getting moisture and dust inside the lens... Canon will completely refurbish everything for you, so it's well worth sending it back to them.

->> In my experience with the 70-200 (also on the 17-35) there are a few screws you can get to by pulling back the rubber to tighten focusing mechanism screws and zoom screws. They help, but there were always a few screws that seem to come loose deeper in the lens than I cared to go. At this point the lens would need sent to the shop or Canon.

I am sure I am not the first to quote Ted Orland's old Photographic Truths poster. It says something to the effect of: You can fix with a butter knife what a camera repair shop will charge you $10 to fix. A camera repair shop will charge you $75 to fix a piece of camera equipment damaged with a butter knife.

->> Hi Jim,

I had the same problem as well. Mine was the middle section where the AF switch and IS switch are. It had to be sent to Canon and the problem was the Image Stabilzer. It had to be replaced as well as the middle elements tightened. It could cause focusing problems and possibly scrathes as thing inside work loose. It was not expensive to fix, about $150.00. Mine is several years old and I use it all the time. I also had the front element screws loosen up and I was able to tighten them by pulling back the rubber ring. Good luck.

->> Thank you all for the input and advice. It worked fine for the game today and I need it Monday for a 85-100 player football team T&I, I would rather use this than my 24-70 2.8 or 135 2.0, just more confident in this. I will have both of these with me just in case.

I will be in touch with Midstate Monday and see if they can fix this while I wait, we shall see.

->> I just got my lens back from CPS for the very same issue. The front barrel of the lens was loose. I tried peeling back the rubber and tightening the screws, but they were already tightened.

It came out to about $160 to get it repaired. I requested a CLA too.

I've noticed that seems to be an issue largely with the Non-IS models.

->> Khai,

What is "CLA"? and should I have this done as well? If it going to be there I might as well do what I need to. I just never needed a repair on this lense. It is about 4-5 years old and used heavely. Just wished this came about 4 weeks ago before the fall sports season, and now I am in an overlap of college winter sports too. I need this daily so what ever I may need to do I want to now.

->> Jim,

Clean, Lube and Adjust. If you have had the lens for a few years and they are going in anyways to tighten the lens sections it is recommended.

->> Just to close this out I took the advice given here and after one more day of shooting I sent the lense to MidState camera repair in warwick RI. They tightened the barrel and all the inards, cleaned it up amd lubricated all inside mechanisms and I am now shooting.

I can't recommend Mid State Camera Repair enough!!! This is the 3rd or 4th time I have used them with no regrets.
I sent the lense to them Tuesday at 12:00 and recievd it back Thursday at 1:00, 2 days at a very resonable cost.

I hear a great deal about CPS/NPS but Midstate does it for me.
