->> Hi Aaron,

The shots in your portfolio are great, but the ones in the "gallery" are, well, not your best work. I am sure I'm missing something on what your strategy is, but as it stands, I have to wonder why there is such a disparity in quality.

->> Phil, thanks for the nice comments on my portfolio. The primary purpose of this website though is to shoot amateur track days and sell the photos back to the drivers. I have the best of the best in the Portfolio section, and the masses of bulk images are for sale in the gallery section. For example, three weeks ago I shot 12,000 photos and sorted them down to about 4000 which are for sale. There are a few great shots in there, a lot of good ones and a lot of okay photos. The important thing is that I need to make sure that I have at least 10-20 decent photos of each driver. They may not be up to the standards of my portfolio photos, but they are much better than most other track day photographers in the area. They can't all be portfolio quality.

These bulk photo sales make up the majority of my side photography business right now, but I am working on getting more editorial and commercial clients.

->> 12,000 images? Wow, I wouldn't want to be your shutter...

Out of all that effort those sell enough to make it worth it? I used to shoot motocross, and people used to pester me for shots, so I started selling them, and I had no where near the level of response to make it worth it. People did not put their money where their mouths were. Now, there are many variables that dictate success in this regard, but on balance I would say you're doing really well if all that effort is paying off. More power to you. Didn't work for me, at least with the motocross crowd. People said I was overpriced, but I'm not going to sell 8x10s for $10. I just stopped doing it rather than giving them away...

->> Yeah, I went a bit overboard that weekend, but we had double the number of cars than usual and I wanted to make sure I covered everybody. Good thing is that all the work has been paying off. :) Made enough to pay for my 5D this weekend and will be getting two paid shots in a magazine. :) I only do this once every month or two though.

Fun thing is that I have four days to shoot back to back in November at two different race tracks. Thinking of hiring somebody to help me with the editing.
