Canon 40D shut down
Jason Minto, Photographer

->> On a recent assignment, I was using my Canon 40D with a Canon 400mm f.28 when I experienced the camera shutting down for no apparent reason; it happened 5 times during a 4-hour period. The quick fix to the problem was to turn the camera off, then back on a second later. The battery charge was good. Here are some possible factors to toss into the equation: I was using a vertical grip, a SanDisk Extreme III 4.0 GB card and shooting in the Manual mode.
Has any one else had this issue? Any fixes that you can suggest?

->> I had that happen also. My problem was the vertical grip had become a little lose. Tighten it and never had the problem again.

->> If the grip is the same one that is used on the 20D, there is a free fix from Canon for the grip. I had mine fixed for free a couple years ago. They returned the replaced parts with it and it appears to be an issue with the logic board as it was replaced. In the short term, if you have a shut off problem, remove the grip altogether.

->> I've had that happen as well. My problem was also a loose vertical grip.
