Cool iPhone Apps. What Do You Have?

->> So I have an iPhone. The apps are endless, ranging from the practical (mileage tracker, news trackers) to the silly (Air Hockey, Lightsaber).
What are your "must haves" and "just for funs"?
I added Showtimes, 300 Bowl, Air Hockey and Harmonica. |

->> Speed- it uses the GPS to tell you how fast you are going. Works in the car, but it won't work for walking. It should work for running.
I like Where because it finds your location and can show you where Starbuck's are. ;-) |

->> I won't mention the on going series of the iPhone App of the Week at http://www.flyingwithfish.com , because I'd rather not be obnoxious or be accused of blatant self promotion.....however while ago I was given an 'original iPhone,' immediately before the release of the 3G, with one simple set of instructions "turn it into a viable tool for travelers."
So far I have reviewed the following favourably
Travelocity
If Found
Lonely Planet Mandarin Audio Phrasebook
Locly
Currency
Coolgorilla's Talking French Phrasebook
FAA Wait
TSA Wait
A Free Level
A few others I am working on are Where, iWant, Flashlight, How Fast and some others.
I have not found any photo Apps that I like yet. |

->> A few I've used with success:
Where (as mentioned above)
Urbanspoon (found a few close-by restaurants in unfamiliar areas)
Movies and Now Playing (rescued me when a movie theater had bad sound and I was able to find another showing at a theatre nearby and made the start)
I've downloaded Air Sharing but haven't yet really played with it though. I want to see if some of its functions can work for transferring photos.
I also downloaded but have not used G-Park. It remembers one GPS location and then will give you directions back to it. Great for marking where you park your car or your hotel and then finding your way back after wandering around a while.
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) works well but I'll like it better when Apple delivers on the promise to let programs like it run in the background and bring notices to the front when you receive them. |

->> Cro-Mag Rally, Pangea VR and AOL Radio.
FYI, I prefer a secure environment for downloading and installing apps for iPhone that have a stamp of approval for iPhone. The LAST thing I want to do is install an app. that crashes or has a virus in it. This is a good thing. Also, many of the apps mentioned are FREE. This includes AOL Radio, Pangea VR and Speed.
Cro-Mag Rally is on sale for $1.99. It is normally $9.99. |

->> I highly recommend the following iPhone Apps:
Air Sharing - Allows you to store and view documents on your phone without having to open them as an email attachment.
AP Mobile News - Easy way to view current news and photos from AP.
Google - Good Google based search functionality with nice tie in to other Google technologies.
By the way, the 2.1 Software released a couple weeks ago has been almost rock solid. It addressed virtually every performance issue I had with the iPhone 3G running 2.0/2.0.1. |

->> Pandora - the best music app
NYTimes
AP Mobile News
Bloomberg - I use this to keep up with the money I used to have
Showtimes - great app for finding what's playing neaby
Facebook -
Jamd - Getty photos
BofA - Bank of America
Weather Bug
Balance - keeps my checking balance ( basic checkbook ledger)
Jot - to do lists, notes, voice recorder to notes
Trip Cubby - for keeping track of business mileage
Google
Aurora Feint - great game
With the exception of trip cubby all apps are free - The New York Times crashes a lot but if you turn it to airport mode - problem solved, let it load first. |

Pandora Radio, Canon Game, More Cow Bell, iPint, Weather Bug, Cubes Lite.
OK, I admit I downloaded PhoneSaber when I first bought my iphone my son loves it.
I am a palm & Windows App developer and am waiting for the right opportunity to buy an Intel Mac to start building my own Iphone app. It is pretty cool what you can do, especially with the Web 2.0 applications.

->> Ian,
I have used FAA Wait and Airport Status quite extensively and find them both to be quite accurate, I find FAA Wait tends to update a little faster and at times catch minor delays that are missed by Airport Status.
To really test them I spent a few hours one busy weekday afternoon constantly reloading both of them while watching live airport delays due to weather in three separate areas in the US. FAA Wait was on top of all of them within a few minutes of the delays being posted and the delay times being adjusted. |

->> The Facebook app is easier to use than the Facebook Mobile site, but it is missing some functionality.
Shazam - indispensible. What was that song?
Movies - I don't use this much, but it's nice to have.
AIM - still waiting for background running, like George said, but it is working well so far. I tried other IM apps, but they crashed too often.
GraphCalc, because I'm a geek.
Labyrinth LE - a cool game, though a bit too easy.
Sudoku... for when I'm really, really, really, REALLY bored.
Pandora. I'd use it a lot more if it could run in the background. |

->> One must-have mentioned by Michael is Constitution.
It is simply the U.S. Constitution in digital form. So when a police officer is placing you under arrest for taking pictures at a public scene, you can pull out your copy of the Constitution and show him you have a legal right to be there.
Okay, probably won't work but I can dream can't I? And it does feel a little patriotic to carry a copy of our legal backbone with you. At least more patriotic than someone who calls you un-American for expressing your opinion just because it is different from their own. Let's see, why did the colonists revolt from the king??? |

->> Awesome post, I've just added a bunch of apps to my phone. So does anyone know of an application that would work for a shot list, say a list of players to shoot for a game, and put checks for the players that have shots, I think that would be a helpful app for photographers.
I have:
Hotel.com
Where
Ebay
Showtimes
Movies - It's great because you can see info on say a movie new to dvd that you may want to buy or rent.
Myspace
Facebook
Google
Keep this going, what are the must have business apps that Ed spoke of but didn't mention the name. |

->> MileBug is a great app, keeps track of miles and you can email yourself (or your employer) a report showing destinations, miles, amounts, etc.
For us in the NW another great one I use is MyWeather. You can put the weather of multiple cities, but the best thing it shows in live doppler in motion so you can see when and where the rain in coming. great for those outdoor shoots.
WhitePages in another one I use a lot, like having the phonebook at your fingertips, also has a good reverse lookup.
AirSharing may be the best app out there, use your phone like a flash drive. Only a matter of time until you can email the file syou copy over, once that happens you will be able to copy a file to your phone using airshare, then email it out....
Paypal makes sending money from the road easy and I have photocalc installed as well, though I only use that to find sunrise and sunset times.
Remote is great if you have apple tv, I also us eit to control what is playing on my computer from the studio floor when shooting so I don;t have to walk over to the computer to change the music.
The wordpress app is great for blogging on the run.
If you have kids, my 4 year old takes over my phone on planes and long car rides, or when she's bored, etc. She loves Tic Tac Toe, PreSchool Adventure, KidsMathFun, MatchesPlus, JirboSays....now that I'm looking at it, I have way more kids apps on my phone than anything else!
For games I have Hold Em and Cro Mag Rally.
I never really used Facebook until I got an Iphone, now I'm addicted. That app is awesome. |

A few I use a lot:
- Sportacular (so I can keep track of games I am not covering)
- Loopt (so I can keep track of wayward assistants)
- Palringo (an IM app)
- Midomi (so my daughter is entertained while we're waiting for dinner out)
- Flashlight (simple but very useful when I forget to turn on the porch light)
- CheckPlease (tip calculator because I'm horrible with math) |

- Camera Bag (allows you to shoot photos with different "cameras," like a Holga, Rolo, B&W, etc.)
- Flashlight (you'll use this more than you'd think...)
- Ambiance (great for relaxing or sleeping on planes or other places with too much noise)
- Shazam (listens to what music is playing from any source and tells you what song it is)
- Fring (can connect to Skype, so you can make calls with an internet connection, rather than using cell minutes, also connects to all other chat programs and puts friends into one list so you can instant message via internet connection)
- Texas Hold 'Em (so I can know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em) |

- Touchmines (Minesweeper)
- Sol Free (good solitaire time waster)
- Gasbag (close estimation of gas station prices nearby)
- iwant (listings for food, drink, etc.)
- Shazam (identifies song on radio, commercial, tv show, etc.)
- Twitterific
- AOL Radio (good variety of local/national programming)
- Pandora (listen to the artists you like)

->> The apps that I use are for the most part listed above. I thought it important to mention that I Jailbroke my phone specificly for the "iPhone Modem" app.
It's 10 dollars, but there is a free trial that has limited functionality. Once you get used to the setup steps, It's a rock solid tethering, mobile transmitting, completely wireless, reliable App. Best 10 bucks I've ever spent.
Link: http://www.iphonemodem.com/
Obviously, the Jailbreaking is necessary because this type of app is disallowed by ATT and Rogers, but I need that functionality, So it was worth it. |

- Night Camera (It basically works like the standard camera app, but in addition to the shutter button, it will take a picture when it senses the accelerometer is steady.)
- Cooliris (You can search photo sites like Flickr and Google Images, as well as look at current news and sports photos from the wires.) |
