->> Hey, is anyone here familiar with the SB-900 emitting some long beeps and then no longer putting out a flash?
I think it happened to me today, but I'm not sure. I returned the flash and they exchanged it on the spot (after 1 day of use, about 150 frames).
Thanks in advance!

->> I need a little bit more information about what settings you were using.
However I was assisting another photographer a few weeks ago and the same thing happened then. He was using multiple SB-900's outside in TTL using CLS and the SU-800 commander unit. We determined that the long beep was signaling that the flash didn't receive a signal and therefor didn't fire.
If you were using it on camera my guess was that you were trying to fire before the unit completely recycled and the long tone lets you know that it didn't fire. |

->> It was outside, shooting TTL using CLS and the D300 as the commander.
I was about 12 inches from the flash unit.
I did determine that the sensor isn't where I thought it was...but it was getting some signal since it knew enough to keep beepin' and beepin' and beepin' at me.
I also wonder if the SU-800 give extended range or reliability over using the D300 as the commander. Any thoughts on this? Maybe I should ask over at strobist.com as well...

->> Anecdotally I've found with the SB800's if they miscalculate the exposure, I get a long beep after it has fired. Almost always the exposure is blown out. It doeas'nt happen often enough for me to wonder what causes it. The very next frame is bang on.
Mostly D300 firing the SB's, but every now and then, far less often, with a D3 and PW's firing the SB'S. |

->> The SB900 as a thermal cutoff sensor that will disable the flash when it thinks the tempeture gets to high. It gives a long beep, flashes a thermometer looking symbol and shuts off. Its really annoying when this happens because you can't get it to shoot again for about 15 minutes even if you remove the batteries etc. Sort of embarassing to have to stop in the middle of a shoot because your flash needs a break.
Luckily theres a custom function to disable this feature. Most belive that the threshold for the cutoff is set far to low because it cuts off under conditions where SB800's always kept going strong.
There may be other reasons why it could give an error beep, but thats the only one I've come across so far and thats my guess for what happened.
As a whole I really like the sb900 though. Its alot easier to get around than the 800, especially using it as a slave or master for CLS stuff. |

->> Jeff-
Very informative! ;)
That must have been my issue. I'll make sure I disable that feature and see if it still continues to happen.
Thanks all!

->> I had this exact same temperature alarm problem, thankfully I had another flash nearby and didn't miss much action. I returned the flash cause the other sb-900 flash I had didn't do this at all, and I was shooting on the same settings all night.
I will definitely be disabling the feature before their next use. |
