Hawaii IronMan

->> The Hawaii IronMan is approaching quickly. Is anyone out there planning on shooting it?
I ask because there is a guy from Red Wing (my papers coverage area) that qualified and will be competing. Since we are a small paper the higher ups quashed the idea of sending me there to cover the race.
We are looking to buy photos from someone that will be covering it though. We don't pay very well, but if you are already covering the race and wanted to pick up an extra bit of cash this would be a good opportunity.
Also, does anyone have any good ideas for ways to shoot an IronMan? it is something like 150 total miles traveled. Do any veteran shooters have good advice? |

->> Cody, is your paper an AP member? If so you can request specific photos from them. There will be a charge, but I don't think it's that much. Last time I checked if they were already covering the event it was around $75.
I remember seeing something here about Donald Mirale covering the Hawaiian Ironman. If I recall correctly he was waiting underwater with scuba gear for the athletes to pass overhead, but for some reason they didn't go directly over him and he had to haul butt underwater to get to them for the shot. |

->> This will be my 16th year in Kona. The race has a limited amount of motorcycles they allow on the course, so do not count on getting one your first time there. They do provide a press truck which stops along different points of the bike course. There are plenty of opportunities in and around the start and transition area.
It is hot and humid so be prepared to stay hydrated and use lots of sunblock. The finish line always provides dramatic images. My advice would be to stay in town and shoot as the cyclists and runners come through. There is an AP guy there as well.

->> Donald Miralle has done some great triathlon photography, some of which is viewable on his website (http://www.donaldmiralle.com) and on the Getty Images website by searching "Donald Miralle and triathlon."
I think this link will take you to some of his triathlon work here...

I've shot about five or six Ironmans, but not Hawaii. The finish line is always chock full of emotion and great fan imagery. You can also get some great images early in the morning as the triathletes enter the water and some cool images as they come out. Often times the morning light makes for some great silhouette or scene setting images.
I took a motorcycle one year during Ironman Wisconsin, but didn't really like being constrained to the bike course for a few hours. Typically you can shoot the swim, parts of the bike and the run all within a reasonably small geographical area--that is if you stick around the transition zones.
Good luck! |

->> Might I recommend our own Rich Cruse. As he states in this thread, this will be his 16th year shooting the race. There are very few photogs that can say that and even less that have an eye for it like Rich does.
You should talk to him and I'm sure it will cost a lot less than sending you to the race. |

->> Hi Cody,
The AP does send a staffer out from the West Coast. I shoot it for Reuters. I am based here in Hawaii. FYI, wire service shooters tend to stay near the start, transition area and finish because of filing deadlines. If I got stuck on the press truck 50 miles out in the lava fields and for some reason can't get back for the finish, that would not be good. Check with Rich Cruse, he has more flexibility than wire service shooters. It's also difficult to find people in a crowd of 2000 competitors spread out over 150 miles, but it can be done. Aloha |

->> Cody,
Which island is it on? I would contact the local paper and ask if they are already covering it. If not, search "Hawaii" on this site and you should get a ton of people. Im on Oahu, and can check me schedule if you give me a time and place. |

->> Thanks Mitch!
Ironman is no easy race to cover to be sure. Hugh Gentry is correct, if you stay near the start/finish and transition areas, you will most certainly have a shot at the person you are looking for.
A shout out to Hugh- an all around great guy and talented photojournalist and videographer. Triathlon is my passion. Any additional work I can get is always appreciated. I will find anyone on race day (if the price is right).
