->> I wanted to post this earlier, but i hadnt got the chance to. Ive been meaning to contact Seale (he lives near a very low lying area in houston) and Co but havent gotten around to it. I hope they all are ok.

I was born on Galveston Island and lived there many years, although im working in Baltimore temporarily I still have a condo in Clear Lake which fared ok, however several close friends nearby lost everything.

My journalistic side really wants to be there taking it all in and making some good images but thats not the case. I have been following the Chron's staff coverage as well as Jay's and Gerry's and the rest of their respective staffs that are down there.

Stay safe everyone and hold down the fort Houston!

You really got some great story telling images in your blog, once again great job and I am glad to see that you are safe.

->> Jay,

Just checked out the blog. Awesome stuff. I hope more photographers that are covering this will take the time out and blog a bit as well.

Its erie to see images like this regardless of where you live, but as I look at these images its a little bit stranger to recognize all of these places. I used to work in Kemah on the boardwalk when I was in high school and part of a current documentary thats in the post production stages was filmed in Bolivar (which was destroyed).

Thanks!

I too want to praise you for some great images taken in Galveston.

Covering such stories in a way that visually conveys what victims of such disasters go through is difficult to capture in the brief time we're often given to do so.

Under trying circumstances you delivered. Add me to your fan base.

->> Manuello...

Thanks for thinking of us.

It's been a pretty hectic few days. We stayed in the house and were fortunate to have only lost a few trees with none landing on us. We've been housing a few colleagues that are in town covering the aftermath. No power, except for a generator, but we do have gas for stove and water heater so hot showers (you are still welcome to come by Kevin) and food are available.

Fortunately, I fueled up for Gustav so gas has not been a problem. Supplies are slowly getting back to normal and we are hoping for power in the next few days. I suspect some folks will be without it for several weeks.

A lot of people lost everything they owned. It's been truly sad to talk to so many that have lost their entire physical history. Still, everyone I have photographed has been upbeat and thankful for what they still have.

Thanks again.

->> Thanks Dave. We're so tired by the time we get home every night (a reporter and me are crashing at my place) and we still have to setup the generator, etc. we just haven't found the energy to make it up there.

Most of our news staff is still sleeping with no power or water in the Galveston newsroom because of the fear they might not be allowed back onto the island. We had power, water and internet restored to our Texas City bureau today. Tomorrow's paper is actually being printed there and the copy desk is coming back from New Braunfels tomorrow and will be running production locally.

We're making progress slowly but surely and reader response has been great, everyone has been very thankful when we put papers in their hands.

->> Kevin, I've been thinking about you there in Galveston. So glad you're safe. We're pretty good here in Houston by comparison. No power and many trees down, but not that much structural damage. Thankfully, the weather has been cool, so the lack of AC hasn't been much of an issue. The one blessing is that most people in Houston have now met and interacted with neighbors who they probably would never have met had the hurricane not come through. People are hanging out in their yards at night instead of watching television. It feels like life did when I was growing up. No internet, little or no television, no air conditioning, windows open, listening to baseball on the radio and hanging out with the neighborhood kids--not so bad.

Todd, Robert Seale lives about a mile from me--I live in the same low-lying area. There was some flooding but it was downstream of us.

Here's a few...the slide show was set up with freeware, so feel free to ignore the extraneous stuff...

->> I'm in Galveston county, but in the far northern area. We had some damage, but nothing compared to what so many have suffered. Our power was back on early this week - far sooner than we ever expected. I've been so busy cleaning up my own home though, I haven't even ventured out to photograph anything. Maybe tomorrow.

Margaret, my neighbors and I couldn't agree more! The silver lining in all of this is that we suddenly became very close to people we had previously only smiled and waved at. Turns out, we've made some very close life long friends in those days of making sure everyone was prepared before the storm, cleaning up and helping each other out afterward, and just trying to stay cool outside. In fact, even though our power in my neighborhood has been on for several days now, our block all went outside last night and barbequed together and talked until midnight.

Kevin, if there's anything y'all need, let me know!

->> Margaret, wasn't that cool front unbelievable. It would have been so much more difficult in the aftermath for everyone without it.

Wendy, thanks, I'm personally doing just fine at this point. We have power back at my house and I had today off work so I could finally clean up the yard. I've even actually caught up on a little sleep.

Paul, good question. Who knows when they'll send me to start covering sports again. Our sports reporters have been cranking out a fair number of news stories themselves this past week.
