->> Jeff,
Can I be first on the list to buy one? ;)
I guess I would have to swap all my Canon gear for Nikon glass and accessories too...bummer!
I've been reading about this on the gadget blogs. Seems like an interesting idea to incorporate video. Its too bad the Motion Jpeg is used though, that format can be a memory hog.
Any idea if it will autofocus and keep focus while zooming?
Not a bad price for an entry level SLR either. |

->> I've been hearing about this, and I'm really, really curious as to how Nikon expects people to keep the camera steady when in video mode. One of the (many, many) reasons DSLR photos have an edge over point-and-shoot photos is that the need to place your face against the camera to compose inherently makes the entire camera more stable, adding a third support point to your two hands. Obviously this won't work when shooting video in Live View mode - which, along with the massively bigger lenses and lack of an articulated screen, makes me wonder if this will be practical for real use.
That said, the second-generation version of this product could be amazing - with attachments to convert the camera to a more stable hand-held video platform and to attach an audio feed, the video from a (relatively huge) DX sensor would be awesome. And, in any case, I may pick one up as a backup body - aside from the RAW buffer, this looks to be a baby D300 in many respects.
BTW, does anyone know if the D80/D90 cameras can be used as remotes with Pocket Wizards? I don't recall seeing a Nikon 10-pin remote port on them, so I'd assume there's either an alternate cable release, or none at all. |

->> I will be getting one of these to compliment my D300 which is a champ. I have had a D80 which has been quite good and worked well as a second camera. My neck appreciates the lighter weight to be sure.
Joshua, the D80 uses a connector that looks like a small USB. I have the wired remote for it. It is different than what is on the D200 & 300
SD cards are a mixed bag. I like that they are really small and that there are not all those pin sockets to get messed up like CF cards. It requires you carry two types of cards and a reader for both.
I wonder if the VR will work with the video feature. I think adding the battery grip would make it easier to use for video as well. LiveView is great but a flip out screen would make it more useful.
Funny about the Canon 50D. If this were two years ago, I would have bought one and perhaps never switched to Nikon. Canon's inability to stay ahead of the curve pushed me to Nikon. Nikon is doing a better job of getting the new technology out the door. |

Neither do most broadcast TV cameras, so no big deal.
If only this had a mic input, even 1/8th inch, it would be very attractive to indie film makers. 24 frames per second with true 35mm depth of field - no crazy lens adapters necessary! |

->> "I'm really, really curious as to how Nikon expects people to keep the camera steady when in video mode."
With a tripod, just like I do with my video camera now. Hand-held video is by nature shaky.
This is a major step in the right direction for visual journalists. Based on David Leeson's article:
http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1774 the 720p frame grabs would be suitable for print, if not ideal. If the video mode is using the whole chip to capture video images, the image quality should be a huge step up from the 1/3" chips and built-in lenses of the current crop of HDV cameras.
Since this is a "prosumer" body, one has to assume that a more professional version would be in the works somewhere down the line. |

->> "I just wonder what the shutter expectancy is. Shooting any amount of video would put you in the high numbers pretty dang quick."
I doubt the shutter is opening and closing at 24fps. I don't hear anything that sounds like this in the audio from the camera on Nikon's demo videos.
The "shutter" in video mode is likely controlled electronically via the CMOS sensor. Which raises another question, if this is possible (as im sure it is, because in live view mode, the shutter isn't clacking away either), I wonder how fast the CMOS sensor can sync to external flashes if the mechanical shutter were taken out of the equation?
I was always under the impression that CMOS sensors couldn't turn off and on fast enough for flash sync, and thus, the mechanical shutter remains part of our DSLR's.
Hmmmm? |

| ->> As I read it the video mode allows the photographer to shoot video using bright, long lenses for that short DOF look. But there is no AF in video mode so the focus is liable to be as good as mine is when the runningback escapes the little red focus point rectangle and my camera locks in on the crowd! Sounds like one of those useless "features" that marketing people love so much. |

(maybe to protect their camcorder sales?) Nikon putting this in a $1000 camera seems a bit smarter. Anyway, YouTube will probably explode. |

->> I might be mistaken, but I think for years people made great images using manual focus, and people still make great movies using manual focus.
I think the lack of autofocus in video mode isn't that big of deal. It will just separate those who can focus manually from those who are simply camera operators. |

->> I think the autofocus button should be taken off video cameras in the first place. It ruins good video.
As for the new camera. I think the biggest point to make is the depth of field. The ability to control the depth of field to the point you will be able to with this camera has always been a costly endeavor until now with awkward and expensive 35mm adapters.
This is a drastic change for all industries, and I believe will change the look and feel of amateur and professional video from the day it's launched. |
