->> It's Friday night, high school and college football haven't begun yet and the Olympics are winding down, so....
It's time for a little OT question for fellow SS members, something I'm curious about.
How many of you, besides me, listen to jazz? By listen, I mean every day or at least 5 out of 7 days a week.
Whether it's working at your computer, driving to and from an assignment, or just lounging around the house, do you listen?
If you know who Trane, Satchmo, The Velvet Fog, Lady Day, Django, The Chariman of the Board and The Girl Singer are, well, you probably do. |

My love of jazz started way back in college and I've been fortunate to see some great acts over the years. I also have a few personal projects in the planning stages involving portraits of jazz performers as well as performance photos. |

->> Of the many different types of jazz, my personal favorite is smooth jazz.
I consider smooth jazz some of the best stress relief music out there. You can call it New Age or whatever you want. Most of my favorites *are* in that new age/smooth jazz genre. Craig Chaquico is my all-time favorite and I have most of his albums. I also like Michael Gettel, David Lanz, Ottmar Liebert, Billy McLaughlin, Cusco and many others. I like the compilation albums from Narada or Windham Hill as a way to find new favorites.
But then, my other all-time favorite, maybe for another thread, is Joe Satriani. ;o) |

I used to be a DJ back in my early days in the US Air Force, so my Jazz collection rivaled Kareem Abdul-Jabar's jazz collection (yeah right). I've loaded every jazz CD onto my Ipod which has 80 gigs and I have maybe 15 gigs left, so if you ever see me at a game listening to my Ipod. I'm probably listening to my favorite type of jazz, Fusion which I started listening to in high school. I love Return to Forever, Weather Report and the Pat Metheny Group. |

If my Dad were still alive, he’d be mad at me for posting this because he thinks anything off the “Kind of Blue” album by Miles Davis is the greatest recording ever. But, “San Lorenzo” off the “Pat Metheny Group” album which came out my senior year in high school is one of the best. I love Pat Metheny and also have everything he’s produced. Growing up I was always considered weird for listening to “old people’s music” and because my favorite group in high school was Return to Forever and not Earth Wind and Fire, The Isley Brothers or Kool and the Gang. This was a GREAT thread…. |

->> I can dig some forms of jazz, but others... I just can't get into Kenny G. Sorry. Reminds me of that awful music at that dirty department store my mom shopped at (and I always got lost in) when I was a kid.
My brother is a jazz musician - started doing pro gigs when he was 13, I think, now he's on scholarship in college - and while I certainly respect and admire what he does, I think I got my fill of most of it back home.
I don't do much listening to music while editing at the office, as we're supposed to keep an ear on the scanner at all times, but sometimes I have to in order to tune out the news editor hooting and hollering about who knows what in the other room.
When I do listen to music when I edit, I find it usually depends on the type of assignment and culture of the people surrounding it. Just sort of helps me get into a little more (unless I'm just angry or exasperated, then I tend to veer towards some old school punk or something else with a lot of energy). Is that nuts? Anyone else do that? |

Walter, you were so fortunate to sit table front for a Gillespie performance. Of course, you know that.
So many of you seem to be fans of Pat Methany. With that in mind, I'm going to purchase my first Methany CD this week. Any suggestions?
One of the wonderful things about this genre of music is that I'm constantly learning to appreciate new artists, be they contemporary or old school. Believe it or not after all these years it was not that long ago that I discovered Art Tatum. Oh my gosh, what a masterful musician he was!
For Sports Shooter members who have only tasted jazz, my I suggest enjoying a full meal by taking 2:54 of your day to view this absolutely masterful rendition of Duke Ellington's I LET A SONG GO OUT OF MY HEART sung by Joe Williams, backed by the George Shearing Quartet - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FKWl5687aw |

->> Caesar,
You have to pick up Pat Metheny Group and Bright Size Life to start off with. Then get Watercolors, 80/81, As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls and Off Ramp. That about covers his first 5 or so, then you can probably start buying 1 each week after that starting with the Live album which came out while I was still in Okinawa, so that should be about late 82' or so. He has a lot, so my main man Pat can be expensive, but once you listen to him. You will always listen to him. Like I said in my earlier post, I listen to San Lorenzo daily because I've added it to almost every playlist I have on my Ipod.
Hope this helps.... |

->> Caesar,
I just went on Itunes and looked up what they have on Pat Metheny and you can actually down load them cheaper than what I paid for them over the years at the BX which was costing around $11.99 at the time of some purchases and now up to around $15.99 and Tower Records which some times had ECM CD's on sale. But I saw 80/81 for $19.99 and I think I paid about $25.00 in Yen for the album and the CD ran me $24.99 at Tower Records. Most of the other stuff on ITunes are for $9.99 or cheaper which isn't bad....
Take care and you will really-really love Pat Metheny.
Right now I'm listening to Secret Story which is a GREAT album. Man this guy is the GREATEST.... |
