Nice position to be in, with a sponsor that provides like that.

->> Louis - first of all you're way out of line in asking that question. You're lucky Bill Frakes isn't answering your post publicly because your question made him livid. What I have worked out with Canon is non of your business nor anyone else's.

If you'd like to post your personal information on the message board and have me discuss it publicly - then perhaps I'm mistaken.

Truth be told: of all of that gear - two are loaners from Canon. That's it. Everything else if mine. I bought it. Canon has NEVER given me a single camera or lens. EVER. I've bought every single piece of gear that I own.

And as far as the stickers - it's a darn sticker! Nothing custom. Buy a Brother P-Touch or get fancy stickers like me - I've had more than $2,000 worth of gear returned over the years due to these stickers - one 2X converter was mailed to me by someone from NFL films one day... w/ no return name or address - it did take them 5 months to get it back to me - but I did get it back.

->> Vincent,
Seems my question/comment came across differently than what I intended when I typed it.
I was if anything at least my intention, I was complimenting you on the fact that a company like Canon would invest so much equipment to use at your disposal which would be a testament to your ability to produce great images.

I asked the question, did not realize it was so personal, so the gear is all your personal gear ok...why so livid? I really was not asking for details. Nice to be that successful to own all that gear yourself.

Obviously, you and Bill Frakes read my question in a very different way than intended.

About the initials/ Stickers , I don't see what your reacting to, I really was not even commenting on the stickers... just that with the variety of focal lengths indicated it was a lot of great gear.

you can email me through my member page. my contact info is there as well.

"i know this for sure.
vince, donald miralle, robert beck, scott strazzante (i could go on with the list of great shooters here) could bring a case of disposable film cameras to beijing and still lay waste to most everyone else."
is total crap. and those shooters know it. you have great gear, access and the KNOWLEDGE these guys have and you WILL kick ass. sorry to be so blunt but that is the truth. get mad at me if you want but all those names would probably make one or two great photos with a holga or a 50mm lens but that's not the real deal...THEY aren't saddled with those rules so saying something like that is really...well stupid. and last but not least...why in the hell would bill frakes be upset with louis' question?

when you wrote "would seem to be quite expensive if you had to buy all that gear on your own.

It just sets so many expectations incorrectly - the point is: Canon does not "give" their equipment away. It just read wrong from my point of view.

No worries though - I really don't take it personally anymore. It just felt real wrong when I first read it - let's just say it got lost in translation.

BTW - my gear is NOTHING compared to what these SI guys are bringing out... peanuts.

Cheers - v

A) how does the battery last that long in teh camera and PW or does it just mean you have to leave it there get your place then you can still reach them to turn them on?

b) Is there a risk of the cameras being stolen?

c) What about the release on the lens focus etc, or do you leave all teh remotes on preset manual focus taped down?

Thanks

that is a lot of equipment, i though i had a lot.... blimey...

d) How much do you estimate may not get used?

e) Are you over packing for a just in case senario?

(i do that last one all the time)

I didn't see any of the Nikon gear in any of your pictures. I could have sworn I saw those black lenses in your hands here in Beijing. Yesterday at the gymnastics venue. I applied for a one year multiple-entry visa to China last Monday, and it was approved right away...had my passport back on Wednesday (I used mychinavisa.com). I just sent in copies of my airline ticket and hotel reservations in Beijing.

My travel is for after the Olympics are over..Sept 2nd. However, my visa is valid as of the day it was issued, so in theory I can hop on a plane tomorrow and will be allowed entry. Maybe I was lucky, but I'm traveling with 8 other individuals...none had any issues getting a visa, and we all applied separately. Then again, we applied for tourism visas, not work visas.

Interesting. I have heard from two other business travelers, who are not photogs who have applied for Visas in the past two weeks. One had no problem, applied in person in New York, the other still has not heard an answer back (as of Friday) in LA.

All three have applied for business visas.

(I would not screw around with China on types of visas applied for)

I for one appreciated your photos of the packing process and decisions made. I always learn something from these types of things. With a European trip coming up, I really do appreciate you, the Kahuna and others taking the time to show your approaches to overseas travel.

And FWIW, I don't think you have "a lot" of gear. Different strokes for different folks, and if that is your kit, then that is your kit. You produce the photos, you decide the tools needed, end of story.

Happy shooting,

P.

In fact I know pros in several creative fields (i.e., woodworking) that also cover the gamut from bare bones tools to eyebrow-raising amounts of tools.

About 25 years ago I stopped caring or noticing how many tools creative folks use. It is what it is. You may get by with a 24-70 2.8 alone while another photog may feel the benefit of adding a 35mm prime in that range. Whatever.

So no, I don't think it's a lot.

Not sure I can be more "real" than simply sharing my opinion, but I'm willing to work on it.
