->> I expect to spend quite a bit of time outside this fall shooting in the sun. I thought it might be a wise thing to protect my head and neck from the blazing sun. What head gear do you use to protect yourself?

->> http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___77946 Basic 30spf booney. I see they also now make an spf 50 booney.
I like the wide very flexible brim. It stays out of the way when shooting and is there to protect when not shooting. THe chin strap is good for keeping it on my head, or for "customizing" the look of the brim.
I wear it quite a bit when shooting and doing yard work.
It also has a very absorbent head band and is pretty comfortable to wear for long periods.
I picked mine up locally, but many camping places online have them. Look for a good deal. |

| ->> If you're worried about heat rather than just sun damage, the new line of Heatgear baseball hats from Underarmour is exceptional --- especially if you buy it in white.... |

->> I second Alan with the Columbia booney. The brim collapses easily when you're shooting so it doesn't get in the way, it's lightweight and vented.
Almost became standard gear when I worked in Florida for sun protection. |

->> I've had the Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero, the Tilley airflow hat and the Columbia booney.
The Columbia is the lightest of the three, is vented, and has the most pliable brim, which is nice if you're shooting vertically or with a PocketWizard on the hot shoe. This hat is the best bang for the buck, and is a lot easier to find in stores.
The Tilley is my favorite, but it costs about twice as much at the Columbia. It has a vent all the way around the top of the hat, and feels like it is built better. The brim has more shape to it, but isn't as firm as a New Era 59/50. It will still bend out of the way when you put your eye to the viewfinder. I've only seen this hat in some local outdoor shops and at REI. I haven't seen it at sporting goods stores.
The Outdoor Research hat is what you want if it's going to be raining, but that's about it. Beyond the breathability of Gore Tex, the hat isn't vented. If you're needing a hat for hot weather, this is one to stay away from. Since in the last three years, I've lived in Missouri, Nebraska and Arizona, I gave this hat to Goodwill. |

->> I'll second the vote for the Columbia Booney!

It's been my hat of choice for the last few years and always have at least two with me - the vented one makes a big difference when it's hot too!
You might look a bit silly but then if I cared about that I wouldn't wear knee pads when shooting :-)
Best Regards,
Justin |

| ->> I've had the Columbia for a few years and find it a good foil for the desert sun. You might also consider this: http://tinyurl.com/5jjzwt |

->> I was considering the SportsShooter bucket hat, in time for football. As well as baseball hat. But in terms of sun protection I can attest. My New Era dark blue Little League baseball cap I wore for over 50 games in full sun, is now NOTICEABLY faded.
Never question the power of the sun.
I used Copertone Sports SPF30 sun block too. Unless some one can offer a better suggestion? I got it in this nice little clip on bottle, I clip right to my ThinkTank hip pack, always in reach. (I just refill from a large tube).
I wish Lens Coat would make a White coat cover for Nikon glass. Could have been very useful. Nikon black gets very hot! |

->> Richard,
While shooting a midday game the carbon fiber hood on my 300 got SO hot it burned me. Now I buy the white tyvek painters jumpsuits. Cut off the sleeves and legs. They make GREAT sun screens in a pinch. Not too bad for a quickie rain shield either. Get the suits with the elastic cuffs it will help hold them in place.
I keep a bag of large wide rubber bands in my bag for securing these to the lenses too. Works GREAT! |

->> Thanks Eric! My lens and body got very hot, I did not burn myself but it was not fun to shoot. When not in use, I covered the lens and my bag with a large whit towel. As I was able to keep my equipment in the players area. But it was still in full sun.
I could have bought my 300mm 2.8 S VR in Nikon "Gray" color, but, then it would not be matching, and I like to be matching. LOL |

->> Tilley Hats. Personally I use the TM-10 - for a mesh hat, it can keep off the driving rain and snow pretty darned well. And it's cool enough in all but the hottest of climates (certainly up to just about anything Ohio can throw at it).
