What phone do you use? Checking e-mails, etc.

->> I've never been much of an extravagant phone guy, but it only makes sense to get a PDA or iPhone type of phone now.
My current, old Verizon LG has the ability to check e-mails, but not respond and frankly it’s a horrible client.
Around April, I bought an iPod Touch, yet since buying it, I rarely use it. As some of you know, it has a great e-mail client for Gmail, but I never wanted to carry anything besides my keys and phone. So it sat on my home computer desk.
So now I am looking into getting a Blackberry or some sort of Palm phone. I would love switch over to AT&T and get the iPhone, but I've always had good service and products from Verizon.
If anyone has suggestions, whether switching to AT&T, pros and cons of the iPhone, what are nice Blackberrys, etc., please let me know.
Thanks in advance. |

->> I used to be with Verizon but switched to AT&T for the iPhone. While it's great and I don't regret it, I think Verizon has a superior network in Texas. I can't speak as to coverage in Maryland.
The Blackberry Curve and 8830 are both good phones on Verizon and handle email great but don't have quite the multimedia options the iPhone has. I've found the push email on the iPhone to be just as good as the Blackberry I had before. I'd avoid anything with Palm OS personally. |

->> I have a Treo 680 on ATT and I like it a lot. The email client works well. The web browser is, at best, okay. It's not like the "real" internet though and it's no replacement for a laptop. What I like about the Treo (using the Palm OS) is that there's tons of software out there, including ftp, and it uses regular SD cards for expansion. All of which make it very flexible.

->> Patrick,
I have the Blackberry 8830 with Verizon.
I have been away with friends who use Sprint and AT&T and in places where there didn't get service, I had 3 bars. And I am not talking about the desert either. For instance, we took a ride to the old Woodstock sight in Bethel, NY and neither of them had serice. It was enough to stay with Verizon.
It (Verizon, and the phone) has never failed me, even though there are some things on the Blackberry that I don't know how to use.
I love the IPhone but not enough to leave Verizon.

->> I have the Blackberry 8700 that I use and like the features of both at home and around the world.
I recently was provided an iPhone to use and sort out how to make it into a true tool for road-warriors. In the two weeks I have had it I have found many 'apps' that I like, but I have also learned that I hate the mail on the iPhone |

| ->> Like Jesse I'm stuck with a Motorola "Q" until my contract with Verizon is over in November and this phone will hit the trash can. Probably the worst phone I've ever owned. I may jump to the Iphone, but I need to hear the real problems first. I heard one lady complain that it won't work inside her house and the only time she can use it at home is in the middle of her garage. When she could use her old verizon phone all over her house. |

->> I have the Motorola Q9c through US Cellular. It works fine with Windows Mobile 6, and I do fine with texting & email, although web browsing is a little slow.
Syncing is easy with Windows XP, but there are many problems with the Vista version since they replaced ActiveSync, and my Vista laptop won't even recognize the dang thing.
Still there are plenty of freeware games you can find on the net along with various utilities, which helps kill time when you're bored waiting for something to start up. My only complaint is battery life: the standard battery lasts about 12 hours of average use, but if you use IM or email constantly, don't be surprised if the phone shuts off within 8 hrs. You can buy aftermarket extended batteries, but the extra bulk won't fit with the standard cases. |

->> Got a Blackberry Curve last week on AT&T. Its great.
It tethers to your laptop, but haven't done that yet. I just completed updating and entering over 300 contacts via an excel, so taking a break from that.
Also, google maps has an app that will work on the BB. It tracked on my BB almost the same as on my GPS.

->> The problem with the VZW 8830 is VZW's international roaming rates. While it is nice that VZW released a Blackberry that is capable of working on a GSM network their rates are quite high when compared to other US GSM carriers for international roaming.
If you're not traveling internationally obviously the 'WorldBerry' ability of the phone would allow you to explore other less expensive options.
Given that VZW is owned 45% by Vodaphone, the worlds largest GSM wireless carrier, you'd think they could come up with more competitive international roaming rates. |

| ->> The Touch by HTC(Sprint) is a great phone, super fast web access and it allows you to set up multiple e-mails. As well as text messaging. I prefer it over the iPhone for the simply reason of being smaller and ligther. It also gives Sprint TV and many other features I rarely use. Check it out you will be pleasanthly surprise and compare with iPhone is cheaper but most importanthly smaller. F |

->> I have the Samsung BlackjJack II. I use it for everything except as a modem. My personal and work e-mail are sync'd. It syncs with my PC at home. I wish it would sync on the Macs at work. We just got 3G in this area and it works well. I can check the CHP website, our work calendar and other handy stuff pretty quickly when I'm out of the office. Even while I'm waiting for a computer in the office.
I also enjoy the ability to edit my Excel and Word documents. Oddly, you can't create a new one. These are not full blown versions of the software so complex formatting can be lost. Complex spreadsheets that carry data from one sheet to another are also not supported, yet.
The AT&T rep also mentioned it is the only phone they offer with these abitlities that can be insured. All the others leave you on the hook if it's lost or broken. Insurance is extra per month.
I've used the built in 2MP camera a couple times to send preview pix back to the office.
Coming from a NexTel i90c, I'm very happy with it. |

->> I bought an iPhone 3G and it is a really great tool with a lot of possibilities.
The only downside is since switching from Verizon is the AT&T network.
I have had more dropped calls and No Service issues the past couple of weeks with the iPhone then I have ever had with my 10 years of Verizon.

| ->> Jeff- If you're still inside 30 days, you should be able to cancel your contract due to service problems. I've done this in the past with Verizon and Sprint. What you can then do, is zap your sim card and put the phone on ebay for a tidy profit. I sold me 8GB first generation iphone for about $405... The 3G's were still fetching about $500 as of last week. |

->> Add me to the Crackberry 8830 world phone on Verizon list.
I had Cingular before they became AT&T and there network was awful. Verizon works great everywhere I've been.
Although I am on my 3rd 8830 in less than a year. I'm not a constant texter or emailer, but I refuse to belt strap my PDA like some kind of super tech geek, so it stays in my pocket all the time. I think the buttons just can't handle the lint or body heat/humidity as they've both gone down this summer.
I'll be going to AT&T and the buttonless iPhone when the Blackberry craps out again. Before or after my contract is up. |

I'll echo the addicting qualities of the crackberry
One thing to really consider is they way the keyboard is set up on the phone. The double-tap, like on the 7100i, is nice for one handed typing while having a separate key for every letter is nice too. I played with a palm centro for a bit, but they keys are just a little too close together/small for me... |

->> iPhone 3G. Love it. I've never been much of a phone person but I decided to upgrade a few weeks ago. I couldn't be happier.
I'm not thrilled with AT&T but I've had Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, Alltel and now AT&T. I've not been happy with any of them. I figured if I'm going to get bad service and dropped calls it might as well be on a phone that I really like instead of on a phone that I can't stand.
3G is pretty great though. I used it in KC and St. Louis. iPhone gives me a great email app plus I can easily look up my other webmail accounts on safari since it's a full version of the internet. |
