Beijing Welcome Dinner for Olympics Photogs
Zach Honig, Photo Editor, Photographer

->> Hey gang,

I want to organize a welcome dinner for photographers coming to cover the games. I'm thinking Quanjude Peking Duck or a hot pot restaurant, depending on how many people respond. Please let me know on this thread or through my member page if you're interested in attending and I'll work out the details! I'm thinking it'll either happen on 8/6 or 8/7, probably from 19:00 or 20:00 until we're done... first round of beers is on me!

Gambei,
Zach

->> Zach --- This close to Opening Ceremony there is no "perfect" date for what you want to do. There are too many photographers, too much to do and not enough time.

My suggestion is just pick a date, a time and a locale and announce it. It will be impossible to plan a group thing like this and have everyone happy with the arrangements.

It's your idea. Your show.

Just my opinion.

Mahalo!

->> Good point, Bert.

We'll do Quanjude (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quanjude) on Thursday 8/7 at 7:30 p.m. Please contact me through my member page if you plan on coming so I can make a reservation.

We can have as many or as few photogs who can make it -- it'll a good time either way!

I'll update this thread with the location in English and Chinese the day before so you can show your taxi driver where to take you. See you next week :)

Happy eating. Don't breathe the air. Make reasonably good images. Grin.

->> Hey Scott -- there are actually five, I believe. I'm meeting with someone at the Wangfujing restaurant today, which I believe is the only one that still has openings. It's also the largest (seven floors). I'll post more details next week.

->> I should have figured all of the Quanjude branches would be booked the day before the Olympics... luckily I was able to talk my way into a reservation for two tables, so we can have 20 people at dinner.

We have two tables in a private room, and it looks very nice. There's a fixed menu with a price of 300 Yuan per person (about $45), so with drinks (not including the first beer, which I'm buying), we're probably looking at $50+ each. That includes a variety of traditional Chinese dishes and 8 large ducks. Nothing too crazy -- but with the Night Market just down the street, we can feast on scorpions and starfish afterwards.

The other catch is that I have to cap dinner at 20... so the first 19 to confirm with me (zshonig@gmail.com with "Peking Duck Dinner" as the subject line) will get to come. Please don't hate me if you're left out -- apparently these rooms have been booked for weeks -- this is definitely their busiest night. If you email to confirm, please be sure to come as I'll have to spot 300 Yuan for every no-show.

Dinner will be at 19:30 on Thursday 8/7 at the Wangfujing Quanjude. I'll send everyone an email with detailed directions once I have 20 confirmed. It's only a five minute walk from the Wangfujing metro stop, which you should be able to reach from the Olympic Green in a little over an hour.

I hope to make this a great start to your Beijing experience... have a safe journey to China!

->> Hey guys,

A lot of photogs seem to have schedule conflicts so I still have room for two more if you're interested... :)

Send me an email if you'd like to come: beijing@popphoto.com

Thanks,

->> Hanashiro is right. One thing is planning it here and once you are there it will be totally different and the folks that sign ed up now may not be able to make it.

Lost of things ,and very fast, goes on at the Olympics and then there is the killing jet lag, how far to go from one venue to the other one, security issues, meeting tons of new folks, other events that may take someone away from a Peking Duck dinner. Like another free cool event with free meals or the lack of sleep knocking you over. I know PJs too well easy to get excited about this and that then reality sink and is another story.

The whole time there will be a roller coaster trip.

That said, and like Hanashiro said, "just pick a date, a time and a locale and announce it." Do it once you are there but first wait and see how all flows.

Hope you dont have to give your credit card # to the rest for reservation. Find out their policy on reservation/cancellation or besides "first round of beers is on me! " the dinner will also be on you. YIKES!

More 2 Come
