Lens for Boxing at the Olympics

->> I leave for a week to Beijing to shoot amateur boxing at the Games. My question is, will a 70-200 MM lens be long enough? I've never used anything longer in all the fights I've shot but I've never shot the Olympics. I know it would be a good idea to bring one just in case but...I don't have a longer lens than this because 1) I've never need one and 2) My budget hasn't allowed me to purchase a longer lens.
I know Canon may have a few lenses but...they probably don't have enough and frankly I'm a little worried.
Thanks. |

| ->> One more thing...what will Canon require if I am able to borrow a lens from them? Credential, Passport, Credit card??? So many questions...excited and nervous... |

->> Having shot a little boxing and a few Olympic Games ... If you're not ringside , which is generally an IOP position with possibly one or two spots available for rotation, LONG lenses will be necessary.
Not having seen the venue or photo positions yet, I would hazard a guess that a 400mm would be the minimum and probably a 600mm would be nice and tight.
Canon and Nikon will have service centers in Beijing, but they have been severely limited in the amount of equipment they were allowed to bring into the country.
Equipment loans are on a first-come-first-serve basic. And usually... unless it is a repair loan, is just for one day ... pick up the loaner gear early in the morning, drop it off that evening.
If you need to use gear daily, I would highly recommend having your own rather than count of getting a loaner lens every day.
Just my opinion.

->> Scott,
If you are not a Canon Pro Services member you should join. I believe you have to be to borrow equipment. As Robert said the heavy hitters will tie up most of the ring space and you'll need at least 400mm from the alternate locations. I personally like the 85 1.8 if you get on the ring, it's a sharp lens on a budget even at F2 and when shot horizontally it gives you a nice tight shot with both boxers from the waist up. |

->> Scott,
Bert is 100% on the money with his advice, I shot the AIBA World Championships this year, and their were a maximum of 4 shooters on the ring allowed. I had a reserved spot shooting for AIBA, AP had one, and they had two rotating spots that were generally assigned by country...

->> At the Olympics you don't need to be a CPS or NPS member to borrow gear, you just have to be a credentialed Olympic photographer to check gear out from the service desks.
But as Bert said, this time the camera makers will have less gear to loan and you are supposed to return it each night and the loaner desks are at the Main Press Center -- so you will have to shuttle there in the morning, get the gear, then go to boxing venue then back at night to the MPC.
Also you will find that some unscrupulous people will check out a lens for the day and just not return it for a few days or for the length of the games. If they don't go back to pick up something else then it will be hard for NPS or CPS to track them down to get the lens back.
So try to get something before you go if you can. |

->> I don't know how many Pool positions will be ringside, it can vary from event to event, depending upon the understanding of the competition manager, and the skill of the Photo Manager.
The Pool positions would then generally go to the largest media organisations - typically Getty, AP, Reuters, and most likely Xinhua. Still, if you don't put your name down for a Pool vest to get ringside, then you won't get ringside. My understanding is the majority of Photo Managers at the Games will be Chinese. Quite possibly unskilled at major events too. Big problem.
Anyway, I'm certainly no expert at boxing, but my SS gallery has boxing pics - I found the 24-70 on a D3 ideal, the 70-200 a little too long. If I were going to Beijing, I'd take a 24-70, 70-200, 400 and converters for boxing. Hopefully, the Photo Manager has a bit of courage and can fight for good photo positions, and good numbers of Pool positions so the major agencies and the competing nations get good positions.
I kinda have my doubts though..... |

->> Never shot boxing, but Canon CPS had a new 800mm at Indianapolis last week for the Brickyard 400.
Impressive...
I didn't shoot with it, but a friend did and told CPS that it was TOO long to shoot racing!
Good luck with the Olympics guys. |

->> Thanks guys...if I were to get ringside, I'm fine but I'm sure if I were lucky it would nonetheless be minimum of time.
I may be able to borrow a lens from a photographer who is accompanying me so hopefully I'll be okay. Generally, I use a 24-70 MM, 50 MM, and 70-200 MM but...no 400 MM and up. If necessary, I'll head over to the MPC as soon as I arrive. |

->> Good luck.
But as everyone has indicated, best to have long glass (400mm and/or 600mm) to use from the photo position which is usually in the spectator seating.
But don't count on ringside.
It is really a hassle to pick up and drop off loaner gear every day from Canon and Nikon at the MPC. |
