D300 frame rate when set to 14-bit RAW
Sam Carleton, Photographer

->> I am looking at getting a 300 in the next few weeks and was wondering about the frame rate when shooting 14-bit RAW. From what I have heard, the D300 only shoots at 2.5 fps when it is set to capture 14-bit RAW, but at 12-bit RAW + JPEG, it can shoot at 8fps (with the grip and correct battery).

The question is: Why?

Is there some technical reason why? What is the difference in file size between the 12-bit and 14-bit RAW images? I cannot imagine it is all that much different in size that it would slow the camera down to only 2.5 frames. My thought is that Nikon made that one of those features to encourage purchasing the D3 over the D300.

When I first got my D300 I tried shooting in 14-bit. Turned if off, and never noticed any difference at 12-bit.

The D3 can handle 14-bit much better.
