Samy's Camera Discounts

->> Does anyone know if Samy's camera extends any general discounts to SS members. I am about to make a purchase and wanted to make sure I didn't miss out on a discount if they offer one. Thanks, Marty

I even emailed a girl that was referred by a SS member here. I'm sure they do a great job but those three cases they were unable to save me any $$. I'll keep trying each time I have a big purchase though, just in case they come through.

then you said:

"but those three cases they were unable to save me any $$"...

I know I'm nitpicking here but you can't have it both ways. Statistically your sample size (3 occurrences) is small but I'll give you that.

B&H might have beat the price but Samys, Roberts, Penn and now Adorama are sponsors so they put their money where their mouth is and back SS day in and day out.

I've never heard anyone rave about B&H's great customer service, or have one of their pro sales guy instant message me and congratulate me on my pending wedding.

->> Gotta say, getting a discount at Samy's using the SS name looking for a discount is like pulling teeth, and I know I am not the only one, and that is if you can get anyone to return your call, they will transfer you over to voicemail for the SS contact person, and hope for a call back, which always comes after I have already gone ahead and purchased because I can not wait anymore.

I have heard a lot of good things about Roberts, I am purchasing some equipment next month, (not a lot about 12,000) I generally like to purchase from a store in my driving area, if I ever have an issue with the equipment, I can take it right back. I may give Roberts a shot.

You can't blame them though, as the markup on these types of items is probably already minimal at best. FWIW, I've always had good experiences with their customer service and I continue to recommend them to others, even if I don't end up doing as much business with them as I do with some other outlets.

As far as supporting sponsors, I use Samy's almost exclusively and it's great to deal with someone who knows me by name, who is knowledgeable and patient as I work through the order to get exactly what I think I need and/or suggest alternatives, and who has been great with the two times I've needed to return a product (manufacturer issue, not theirs).

Can't say I've come close on any of those points when I tried to deal with B&H (on one of the six days of the month when they're actually taking orders...).

->> Having worked in Pro Camera retail briefly, margins are very tight - BH Price is often next to cost for many smaller retailers.

That said - I have used Samy's for quite a few things - like Louis their was some leaving of voicemails at first, but now I just call or email Laura and she gets back quick. Usually the price is as good or better than BH - plus when I need stuff for local pickup they are there. Same with being able to get things super quick in an emergency or other time when having a salesperson you have built up a relationship with really matters.

In other words. Find a store you like, one that works for you, build up a rapport with them, even if it costs you $10 more at times, in the long run it should be worth it.

My wife found it on their regular web page and it has a $30.00 instant rebate (which the Samy's rep did not mention). My wife will order as an unknown customer and get the rebate rather than I ordering it for $30.00 more. Go figure...Marty

While I can swallow that margins and profits may put them at a disadvantage form time to time, professional courtesies and service should never be sacrificed.

I'm not the sort of person that buys much gear either, but I have found their service to be quite good on those occasions. As always, YMMV, but it's great to support the sponsors if one has a chance.

Price - well, I always get quoted the same price as they put on the website. I've stopped asking. compared to some others, I don't spend a lot on equipment. What I do spend seems like a large amount to me.

->> I was looking at a Nikon Coolpix P80 as a gift for my daughter. Sunday night my wife found it on their web site for $339.00 less $30.00 rebate for a total of $309.00 plus shipping. I used Kevin's advice and used the ask Samy's feature. They responded that the price was $339.00 but said nothing about the rebate so my wife went on their web site Monday afternoon and their price was now $369.00 with a $30.00 rebate bringing the total to $339.00 plus shipping. It looks like by attempting to get a better price I actually lost $30 due to a price increase on Monday. Moral: He who waits/negotiates loses. Another lesson, Thanks to All, Marty

->> I guess I am the anomoly, I have had great service. Though I did buy two big ticket items, they were at the market price and in stock.

Remember, part of this business is having relationships with a store, where you can get what you need with little notice.

Many of the sponsors on this site have done back flips for many people to get gear shipped to get us out of jams.

My experience with Sammy's has kept me a customer, plus others have stated, how often can you get a rep via IM at off hours, that is why we professionals need to keep our toys stores in business that help us stay in business.

Remember you get what you pay for, sometimes you might pay market price or better for the service, if you want the Big Box store (not that there is anything wrong with that) there are those camera stores out there.

The SS Discount, etc.. does not apply when making purchases at the store, you need to contact the Right people [Louis, Laura, etc.] beforehand via the site/email addresses for them.

What???
when did that start?, so that is the key...is there a secret handshake as well that some of us don't know about?

I just really hate that when you do ask about a sports shooter discount, they look at you and roll their eyes like your a sorry S.O.B. and your causing them a problem.

I should have added that it not applying when just walking off the street is what it __seems__ to be in my experience... not sure if that is 100% the case or the actual policy, but I think the majority of the other staff not affiliated with thier Gov/Edu/Corp Sales are unaware of it... hence why I call ahead.... where I then go into the store and pick it up at will call no problem...

Hope this helps, if you want contact info for my contact message me

Samy's has a horrible in-store policy, where they don't put prices on anything and overcharge depending on what they think they can get you to pay. Tried to get me to pay $100 over the real price of a card and card reader combo.

->> I always call Samys and talk to Laura Madden or Corrie Clapp. If they're not in I'll leave a voice mail, then follow up with an email later.

They are very busy, and one or two times I've needed to call back the following day, but usually they'll call or email back within a few hours. They're always a pleasure to work with.

As said above, the margins on most equipment are very low. I've compared their on-line prices, the quoted prices, and what B&H would quote, and found most of the time Samys was meeting B&H's prices.

Even if they couldn't match the prices, Laura and Corrie are fun to talk to and treat me like they want my business. They have never been rude like B&H's phone staff have been, and I have never had Samys ship the wrong things or quote a delivery date and miss it by a week. Best of all for me is that Samys is in the LA area, and I'm in Phoenix, so even UPS ground usually is here the next day. That difference in shipping cost and usually overnight delivery makes up for any savings I'd get by ordering from B&H.

It's really important to call the sponsor's contacts, and not just the main store numbers as the approved contacts have access to the spreadsheets showing our discount rates. It's really important to identify yourself as a sportsshooter member to the sponsor, and have their stock numbers at hand to avoid confusion and speed up the order. The SS sponsors are busy - they don't sit twiddling their thumbs waiting for us to call. In Samy's case they're handling industrial sales for their Southern California area - that's Hollywood folks and there's a lot of big studios and shooters moving gear through them.

My first choice for ages was B&H. When the D3 came out, not only could Jody get me one without placing me on a waiting list, he gave me an excellent price.

They also called back to make sure everything was being done correctly.

I forget the name of Jody's assistant, but she is also VERY helpful, and makes sure things work out as expected. If you need her name, or email, I'll look it all up and post it here.

Not sure how that managed to do it, but B&H treats their customers like crap and still has a cult-like following, I wish I could do whatever I wanted and say whatever I wanted to my customers and still get them to give me their hard earned cash, life would be so much simpler. Even if Samy's was $500 more than B&H I'd still shop at Samy's over B&H However, after how I've been treated by the staff at the Samy's in Santa Barbara I'll never shop there anyway, I'm a customer they should be trying to establish a long term relationship with, not a "mark" you're trying to scam for a quick buck.

Thankfully Jody at Roberts is always willing to pick up the phone, get to know you and get you a good deal on your equipment. In fact I'll be calling him tomorrow to order my second 70-200 from him.
