My fear is that this behaviour -- unthinkable even a short time ago -- will become so prevalent that it will become background noise.
Perhaps that's their goal. |

->> I'm not excusing FOX at all. What they did was WRONG and UNETHICAL. There is NO excuse for it and it makes me question everything they do.
But all the comments "Nothing that happens at Fox News surprises", "ow many 'new lows' can this outfit inflict on the world?" makes it sound like people are surprised at cable news.
There is a reason CNN is know as the Clinton News Network.
Here is a few examples of what CNN has been doing for years:
During the last presidential election CNN put the words "It's the Economy, Stupid" under Bush during a speech about the economy. The phrase "It's the economy, stupid" was widely used during Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential campaign.
or this:
http://www.buzzflash.com/analysis/06/03/CNN_socalledwot.jpg
now I'm sure you can find similar examples about every TV news network.
So instead of assuming FOX is doing it because they are biased, just know that all the TV news networks are.
Turn off your TV and read a newspaper. |

| ->> Unethical I'm not sure of, stupid yes. It wasn't intended to deceive, it was intended to be funny. It wouldn't have been comedic if they showed the pictures and labeled them as altered. What Fox News did is no worse than what some of the doctored video/photographs that late night talk shows create to get a laugh. I personally think we are over reacting to this story. Its not like they altered war photographs like the L.A Times. |

->> Media Matters ran this on their front page? How did they find room for this among the usual "stolen election of 2000 and 2004" stories?
I read the article and I rather doubt that the viewing public was honestly fooled into thinking that the New York Times has a poodle on its payroll after having eliminated so many human positions from their newsroom.
Perhaps the photos should have been specifically described as "photo illustrations" but is that really necessary when the photo is of a poodle with a human head? We often lament the lack of trust on the part of the public when it comes to the authenticity of a photo, but at what point are we going to trust the public enough to conclude for themselves that Jacques Steinberg is not a poodle with a human head, regardless of his political leanings? Is it not a bit arrogant to assume that people are not capable of reaching some reasonable conclusions on their own?
As for the manipulated photos which were less obvious, this is the slapstick stupidity of newscasts as entertainment. Years ago, it was funny when Saturday Night Live immitated TV News. More recently, TV News is trying immitate Saturday Night Live and it really is not funny. |

->> Additionally, surprised by Fox??? They're not even a real news channel but rather a de facto arm of the RNC. People who are critical of Fox aren't just folks with a different opinion, they're The Enemy.
Expecting Fox to be politically fair would be like asking TBN to be fair during a Christianity vs. Islam discussion. |

->> Jeff, when has CNN or MSNBC "sunk to the low" of Fox and altered a photograph without disclosure?
CNN used "So-called War on Terror" in a cut line because the term is incorrect. You can't wage war on Terror. You can fight terrorism or terrorists but not terror. Maybe that's why the White House changed the term.
Regardless of your political leanings, don't be a Fox apologist. It just makes you look silly. |

->> Scott, it is totally unethical - you could make the argument that it was ment as comedy if they had disclosed that the photos were doctored - or maybe if it was SNL or comedy central. Buut FOX is a news channel and they should know better.
Jack Joseph Jr's comment - "surprised by Fox??? They're not even a real news channel but rather a de facto arm of the RNC. " is a perfect example of the reason for my original post.
I'll say it again - I AM NOT DEFENDING FOX. What I get upset at is attitudes like Jack Joseph Jr's. |

Who am I apologizing for? I've said in every post that I think FOX is wrong and unethical.
This post is staring to sound like the knee-jerk reactions when someone is critical of a minority - your instantly branded a racists weather your criticism is accurate or not.
I'm sure this post will have the same reaction too - and words aren't always read like you speak them.
But, let me be clear again.
FOX is wrong and unethical for altering those image. (period)

->> Scott G,
comparing what FOX did to what the LA TImes did is a low, and uninformed, blow.
The FOX alterations were done in a studio, with multiple people involved, from the producers, to the person who actually did the alterations. In short, they ran the photos knowing they were altered.
The LA Times photo was done by one photographer in a war zone. And while there is nothing that justifies altering war photos. When the alteration was discovered the shooter was fired and the photo was retracted.
The bosses at the LA Times did not decided to run an altered photo - they ran it not knowing it was altered.
FOX cannot make the same claim. |

These photos were not presented in the context of humor. Watch the clip.
It's basically the same technique a major national magazine used with OJ. They changed the aspect ratio of the photo and darkened around the eyes...makes the person look more menacing than they did in the original photograph. |

->> For those you don't even watch Fox News, "Fox and Friends" is a light hearted morning talk show that does some serious news along with some attempt at comedy (they play Leno and Letterman clips for god sakes).
If you watch the whole clip (at minute 1:28) you see them put the two guys faces over another guys face and a dog. They were trying (I said trying) to be funny. An obviously altered photograph to try and be funny is not the same thing as altering a photograph to try and deceive someone for political purposes or otherwise. I would be saying this no matter what channel it was on.
If it was intended to deceive for political purpose they would have either done it better (because it looks like it was done with photo shop elements) or make it more incriminating (more incriminating that having yellow teeth and big ears).
The whole point is deception and the intent to deceive. In this case their was little if none. If you really thought that's what they looked like I'm sorry to tell you that your gullible.
Did you know that that gullible isn't in the dictionary? |

Not to get all philosophical about this, but a vibrant democracy needs a spectrum of opinion from far left (which doesn't exist in a mainstream way in this country) to the far right (hello FOX). Getting all your information from one source is not the best way to participate in that democracy.

->> I think Alex was being sarcastic? ... a vibrant democracy needs a spectrum of opinion from far left (which doesn't exist in a mainstream way in this country)
I actually was not being sarcastic though I must confess to watching CNBC also and on a rare occasion CNN. We do have a spectrum of opinion in this country. The left is very well represented by CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, La TImes, NY Times, etc. IMO, Fox is the only network the left cannot control and it must drive them nuts. In terms of talk radio, there been far left attempts such as Air America but have failed because no one was listening and if no one is listening who would want to advertise there so the left is going to have to be happy with NPR, which is available in far more places than Rush. |
