Should BOP name be scraped or changed ?

| ->> Should the Best of Photojournalism be scraped? It's supposed represent the best work of photographers, photo editors, newspapers and magazines. But with the most recent cuts (Palm Beach Post 22 % and The Miami Herald 17% of their work force ) how can this competition represent the Best of Photojournalism. The best photo editors and photographers are being kicked out the door. How can this competition be called the Best of Photojournalism ? Should it just be called Photojournalism (with the year) ?Example: Photojournalism 2009 |

->> Huh? its the Best of Photojournalism because its the 'BEST' of that year. All things are relative. Using your example you could say that since X photographer died last year, and X was the best, then there is no need for a contest. Plus how do you factor in great photographers who don't enter?
This just makes no sense to me. There has been downsizing all over the country. Are the shooters in FL the only ones who make the contest the BEST?
oh, and I think your icon is upside down |

->> Do you mean scrapped?
scrap |scrapped, scrap·ping. --- to discard as useless, worthless, or ineffective
scrape |scraped, scrap·ing---- to deprive of or free from an outer layer, adhering matter, etc., or to smooth by drawing or rubbing something, esp. a sharp or rough instrument, over the surface
both definitions from dictionary.com
Scrapping and scraping are two different things and depending upon what you would do to Best of Photojournalism, the result would be completely different. |

->> How about PBOP?
Percentage Best of Photojournalism.
But I prefer BOB – ITR.
Best of Best. Ignore the rest.
What does it really matter? |

BOP is free to enter, POY costs 50 bucks! |

I can think of one thing that needs scrapping. This thread. Really, don't you have anything better to do? Put down your keyboard and go make some pictures. Or go scrape something. Just leave us out of it, okay?

| ->> But in all seriousness, why? The contest is open to anyone, so they're not required to still be employed by newspapers. Sure, the decline in newspaper staffs hurts the field, but there will always be a need to recognize the best work being done in whatever context it is done. |

| ->> All I'm saying is if the industry is putting out product with minimal resources how can we say it is our best. With budget cuts it puts impossible task to the ones that are left in the newsroom. In the process we might be lowering our standards or expectations. In the end is not our best. |

| ->> I'm one to think BOP should only be for NPPA members (visualize Brad bracing for impact of criticism). Photographers have to be members to participate in the monthly clip contest. POYi has an entry fee, $50 I think. $110 isn't that much to enter a contest, given the NPPA membership and benefits that come along with it. I understand the spirit behind BOP being a contest with free entry, but if the NPPA is serious about increasing their membership (which we need to be) this is something they should consider. |

->> Brad,
I have to beg to differ. POY used to be free to NPPA members and have an entry fee for others. part of the reason for the split was over the entry fee issue. The NPPA stance has been that for a contest to be truly representative of the best of photojournalism it needs to be open to all, regardless of means. A contest will never be the driving force of increasing membership. I don't know a single photographer for whom entering the BOP is a driving force in their career.
The BOP, as a free to everyone, is part of the overriding NPPA mission of being the main voice for photojournalism in the world. By closing entry (or limiting it) to only NPPA members, would be counter to that mission.

Are you troubled by these stats: Huh? 61.65% 344 (from 209 members)? It seems like you have a real problem trying to get your point across. |
