Lenovo track button, like/dislike?

->> I'm considering getting a new Lenovo pc, I've never had a notebook with the track button in the keyboard tho. Curious for those that have one if you like using it, dislike it? Does it get in the way of regular typing?

->> I have owned several laptops that have the "pointer nub". I never use it, and it doesn't get in the way at all. In fact, I had to look down at the keyboard as I type this to be reminded that this computer has one.

Lenovo makes good laptops, but have you considered buying an Apple Macbook Pro, even if you would use it to run Windows? I have one that my wife primarily uses, and I think it is the best designed laptop available today.

Cheers,

-Jim

->> Erik,
I have an old Thinkpad T42 with TrackPoint. To be honest, I don't use it. Although, some people swear by it. I do not find it to be a nuisance during everyday use. It does not hinder typing.
I'm not sure about the new Lenovo-branded products, but I can tell you that the IBM Thinkpads are great machines. The build quality is outstanding. Better than anything I've owned before, which includes a late-model MacBook Pro.
Best of luck with your decision!
Dave

->> Clarification -- My MacBook Pro comment was not an attempt to counter Jim's advice. His comments had not been posted when I started mine.

->> I used to have a notebook with the eraser and it made my hand hurt. It did not get in the way of typing.

My current notebook has a track pad but I use a mouse with it most of the time.

->> as opposed to others, I like the trackpoint. My 2nd laptop (Toshiba Tecra 8000) had one as have my Thinkpads. I much prefer it over the trackpad, but then again I started using a trackball in 1990, so it just kinda makes sense to me.

->> I had to get a new laptop computer at the end of February. I ended up buying a Lenovo 3000 series Y410. It's quite a computer for such a small package. It doesn't have a track button, but it does have a touch pad like all laptop computers these days. I never use the touch pad.. I just plug in my trusty Microsoft optical mouse and use it instead.

It takes a while to get use to the glossy screen. The screen is a 14-incher, so it's not the best thing to do photo work with.

I have used Toshiba and an HP laptops in the past. I've never had a problem with any of them except they would get a bit long in the tooth as far as systems go after 3-4 years..

->> I have used IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads for 8 years; T20, T30, T42, T43 & now T61. They are standard issue in my company. I can attest to the fact that they are workhorses...very durable.

They have all had the touch-point and the touch-pad combination so the user has a choice. My choice is a bluetooth mouse. When that's not possible, the pointer. For me it is easier than the touch-pad. Others in my company swear the opposite. To each his/her own. Nice that the T61 and T40 series has both options.

->> I'm on my fourth Toshiba laptop and it was Thinkpad's before that.

The last three have all featured the trackpoint/touchpad combo and like a few of the other respondants I am a fan of the trackpoint if I can't use a mouse.

I've never been a fan of the touchpad and find that since they started to support clicking directly on the pad I often end up highlighting a section of text I've typed just before I hit the next key, deleting it all! I turn the touchpad off and just stick with the trackpoint.

The newer trackpoints are a lot better than the first IBM ones (remember the ponter witha life of it's own as the laptop temp changed!) and support varaiable speed dependant on pressure applied etc.

->> The ONLY think I liked about my IBM ThinkPad was the 'red clown nose.' The control I had with the track button was fantastic, much easier than the Apple track pad.

If I could run Mac OSX on a Lenovo ThinkPad on the road I would (I know there is OSX86, but I'm not sure how stable that is)
