->> My bad, I thought that like some I have spoken to today, they were disappointed.
Personally, I think I'm getting the free Nokia 6555.
If I need an Ipod, I have a Nano
If I need the Internet, I have a laptop
If I need a digital camera, I have several
For a Cell Phone..... I'll get a Nokia :D
Even for $199, it's pricey.

->> Ric,
Good one.
I will second that. I used a Treo for a little more than a year before I got the iPhone and the ease of use, syncing etc. is way beyond any phone I've had before. I often use the web from the sidelines to make sure photos are posting on our web pages and therefore I know they are getting to clients through the web as well as our other routing methods to clients. The fact that all my bookmarks are transferred directly from my computer to the phone anytime I sync is great.
My one gripe has been the slower connection compared to the Rev A I had on the Sprint network on the Treo. Now the iPhone is faster I'm much happier. I recently had to swap out my iPhone for one due to a SIM card read error -- nothing really major. Apple's syncing let me completely restore my phone from my backup in under 2 minutes. Usually when you have to reset a smart phone you can easily sync back your contacts, but any special settings such as desktop, unique ring tones and photos for callers have to be manually entered. Not on the iPhone.
Also, I have the cable that connects the iPhone to a TV so I can play downloaded TV shows and movies on a bigger screen when at home or watch them on a good screen of the phone when traveling.
Oh, and I think without extending my plan I paid way more than $200 for the Treo two years ago. So the iPhone is not too bad in the world of smart phones and with the apps being developed it will do a lot more a lot easier than other phones. |

It's not so much that I want to use it on another carrier - my contract with T-Mo expired a few months ago and I really don't see any reason to stick with them - but it really puts a crimp on my strategy of buying a local prepaid SIM to use with an unlocked phone when traveling abroad. |

Noone will no for sure until the new one is out in people's hands.
2nd:
The price was dropped to $200, however, that data plan went up $10/month/yr... on a 2 year contract thats $240. So actually, its a price INCREASE of $40.
Why apple? Why? I really would like to, but your overpriced dealings with AT&T make me choose not to. I want to be able to use foreign sims as I choose when traveling, which are a big cost saver when abroad. |

->> "Why apple? Why?"
Because Apple is doing all the development work, and kicking some doors down on features that make a cell-phone more than just a phone. Before the iPhone big cellular companies like Verizon didn't care at all what we wanted. Now they're scrambling to find the iPhone killer. I've seen and used their candidates, and they fall short.
Just as with the iPod's competitors, I don't think they will find something that can catch it - Apple has too big a lead. Apple knows user-interface and spends a lot of money on research, design and UI testing to learn what people like.
Yeah, the costs are higher, but it's a world of supply and demand. Right now that's in Apple and AT&T's favor because the corporate world is drooling over the capabilities of those phones. Eventually the prices will drop across the industry. |

It's definitely possible to transmit images from the iPhone (via email) - as long as you don't mind shooting with the crappy built-in 2MP camera... great for "citizen journalists" and the like. As far as tethering to your laptop goes - Patrick is right, we'll have to wait and see. My guess is that AT&T won't enable it out of the box - so a hack may be required. |

->> Actually, you can e-mail any photo you have loaded onto your iPhone.
I don't think you can tether directly and use it as a modem. You can load a photo into the phone and then select it and e-mail.
These days I don't prefer to use the phone as a modem as I used to. I use a USB cellular modem for that. It's fast, easy and frees up the phone for use as a calling device. Or when I'm using my cell modem on my Cradlepoint router to transmit images from a WFT, I use the iPhone to send an e-mail with caption info to the editor at the office. |

I still like that the blackberry can be tethered and act like a decent modem when I am on the road.
I like the iphone, but I renewed the contract last year so I am crack-berrying it for a while. |

->> I think iPhone is nothing all that new. Nokia had their N95 out for quite some time. It's 3g, it plays music, it has gps (actual gps not support for bluetooth gps antenna), it has camera (if you can call phone cameras cameras), it has 8GB space, and it you can actually connect your laptop or handheld to internet through it. But yes, it doesn't have fancy GUI. Probably others like Motorola, Sony/Ericsson..., have similar models too.
Otherwise I agree iPhone (this or previous version) looks cool, but that's pretty much it for me. 8GB is too little for me, to be used instead of iPod. 16GB is a bit better, but still too little... sorry I just like to keep my music handy, so I can listen whatever I feel at the moment.
For USA it's probably different, but over here in Europe, 3G is must if you want to send any photos over mobile network, so until now iPhone was completely useless. It doesn't have gps, so I still need bluetooth gps antenna, and the most important thing, at least from that what I heard. You can't connect your laptop to internet, because iPhone doesn't act as modem (I'm not sure if it's true, I just heard that). But once again, I agree it has really cool GUI. |

->> Primoz,
The 3G phone has GPS, not just a bluetooth connection. I've over years of having iPods and now an iPhone that I really don't care if I can copy over all of my iTunes library. I think with the applications coming out for software version 2.0 will really set the iPhone apart. Since third party vendors can now add apps it will be interesting to see what comes out. For companies, I think the ability to create a proprietary software for your company that has access to other functions such as the web browser and VPN connection will be interesting to watch. I know our company among others use Salesforce software and Salesforce demoed an iPhone app a while back. I don't think you see anything like that on other phones.
Aric,
I think the ejector tool (a fancy bent paper clip) is for folks who upgrade. All you will have to do is pop the SIM from your current iPhone, slide it in the new one and then restore from your iPhone backup on your computer and you are functioning. I had to swap out my original iPhone last weekend due to a SIM reader issue and that's all they did at the store. Pop out the SIM, put it in a new phone, check the number on their computer and 2 minutes later they handed me the phone activated. Then I plugged it into my computer and it asked if I wanted to restore the new phone from my old settings and I clicked yes and about a minute later all my settings were back.
I've never had a phone that did that. Yes you can easily sync your contacts back but any other settings like backlight timing, custom rings for callers etc. always have to be reset manually. Not the iPhone. |

->> Another thing I find interesting about the 2.0 software is that anyone can download the software developers kit and write a program. Also, now you can distribute that program directly to 100 phones.
So if your paper wants to write some specific software, say something to keep notes during shoots that you can transmit to the office or transfer to the editor handling your images or video -- someone can write it for you or maybe one of your IT people has programming experience and can write a program that only your paper uses.
You can't say that for any other phone out there. |

->> While it is not "out there" yet, Google's Android will offer more in an open platform. The iPhone is ground-breaking on several fronts, but it's users will always be at the mercy of Apple and the carrier. I'm surprised more people aren't up in arms over this - particularly here in the States where the cell phone industry lags far behind the rest of the world in innovation, sophistication and choice.
Android is the first real option I've seen to offer consumers control aside from OpenMoko, which has yet to gain much traction.

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2008/03/06iphone.html
This is from March, and I'm not sure if they've changed the policy, but I doubt they'll be approving any hacks that cut into their profits. My guess is that using the phone as a tethered USB modem will still be an official no-no. |
