MkIII problem. Shutter doesnt operate?
Adam Lewis, Photographer

->> So my 1D MkIII shutter will no longer operate.

I can focus, I can press the shutter button, and I can make the reflex mirror flip up but the shutter never opens and the camera just throws an Err 99 until I pull the battery for a couple seconds and put it back in.

Anyone heard of this happening? Ive had mine since September and never had a single problem. If nothing else, I suppose Ill just send it in for the sub-mirror fix and have this repaired under warranty at the same time.

Id just like to know if it has happened to anyone else :(

->> Adam - So the shutter doesn't work at all? Did you get any images with a white slash across them prior to this happening? Are you a CPS member?

Did you try a a back panel reset (not sure how to do this with a MkIII - the MkIIN has a button combo on the back panel that resets everything)? How about taking out the Date/Time battery?

->> Ive tried absolutely everything possible. I never had any images that looked like a busted shutter prior to this happening. The camera was working fine one day and when I went to use it today, I just get the click of the mirror going up and then Err 99 on the LCD screen.

Ive tried pulling the battery, pulling the small battery, formatting cards, using the "sensor cleaner", with lenses, without lenses, with cards, without cards, tried a different battery, and even tried the AC power supply.

Seems that no matter what I do, if I actually try to operate the shutter, it stops dead and throws Err99.

Using the "Clean Manually" feature will also cause it to dump on itself until I pull the battery and start over.

Its something wrong with the operation of the shutter itself.

->> Sorry to hear that. Hope you're a CPS member. My last repair, to fix a busted focus mirror on my MkIIn, took only 4 days door-to-door to turn around via CPS.

->> The Error 99 usually indicates a software problem and requires a trip to CPS to fix. One of my Mark IIIs came back from the mirror assembly update with the same problem. CPS replaced both the shutter and the logic board.

->> Well I called Canon last night and they said when it goes to VA for the sub-mirror fix that they will fix the problem its having right now as well.

Heres hoping.

Thanks for the replies.

->> Adam, my first Mark III had the same problem. It was only the second time I had used it when it stopped firing. I sent it back and Samy's gave me a credit. I didn't try to get it fixed.

->> Margaret, You are lucky o have it on a new one. My almost 1 year-old Mark III had the dreaded error 99 happen at the end of May. Sent it in to CPS came back working ok. Then tonight one month later it crashed again, second round of error 99. Losing confidence with this body.
