->> "Forty years ago tomorrow, photographer Bill Eppridge captured the image that many can't forget: the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy."
SportsShooter member and Baltimore Sun photographer Christopher T. Assaf wrote and produced a very nice article/multimedia piece about Bill at his home in New Milford, Conn.
You can read the story here:

and the multimedia piece here:

Also, be sure to check out Bill's new book, "A Time It Was: Bobby Kennedy in the Sixties."

I love the ending to this story.
Thanks for sharing it with us Assaf and for posting it here Chris. |

->> Bill is, of course, an icon of our profession, but similar images of the RFK assassination were shot by Boris Yaro of the L.A. Times and by Ron Bennett of UPI.

->> I have the book and it is as amazing as I expected, if not more.
And the presentation that Bill Eppridge did at SportsShooter a few years ago is burned in my mind forever. |

->> AND ...KPCC's Pat Morrison has an interview with former LA Times photographer Boris Yaro, who also made the photograph of Bobby Kennedy in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel after he was shot by Sirhan Sirhan 40 years ago ...

->> Listening to Bill Eppridge speak about covering the Robert Kennedy campaign of 1968, and subsequently shooting the famous shot of his assassination. And then hearing Michael Zagaris talk about being a Kennedy campaign assistant and being there that tragic night. All in the same room at the same breakout session at the last SS Luau is something that I will never, ever forget. And I'm pretty sure most everybody in that room feels the same way. Talk about an hour of history, inspiration, and utter respect for both photojournalism and humanity that will last a lifetime... all from a little old event that cost a college student a couple hundred bucks. I am forever grateful.
I recently purchased Bill's new book from Amazon and once I pulled it out of the box, I didn't put it down until I'd gone cover to cover. It's a great read with incredible photographs all revolving around one of the biggest "what if's?" in recent U.S. history. I'd recommend it to anyone, whether you're a fan/student of "old school" photojournalism, or just interested in a pivotal moment in history, it's a fantastic book. |

->> Jean ---
I have received a bunch of emails since last night after I mentioned the Workshop & Luau and posted the links to those videos ... They all wanted to know "What is the Workshop & Luau?" |

->> Wow.
As time passes, and without any other experience in my life to even compare it to, I fear that the LUAU was 'lightning in a bottle' that would never have happened without the complete conviction and support of some very special people.
Of course, there are other events and I'm sure they all have their unique value, but the synergy of LUAU was unique.
That being said, if I was to win the lottery .... *grin*
Maybe someday a reunion? |

->> I heard Mr. Eppridge speak at the Flying Short Course in Sacramento in the early 90s and was awestruck. I then got to meet him and spend time listening to his inspiring stories at the Rich Clarkson's Sports Photographers workshop in 1997 held in Colorado Springs and he is amazing.
I was able to track down a copy of the Last Campaign and it is one of most prized possessions. |

->> That is a fantastic iconic image by Mr. Eppridge and a great book. Just curious how many photogs today would have blasted that scene with flash. That image without the darkness would not have the same feel and emotion to it in my opinion.
Does anyone know if he talked about that at all, was it a choice to shoot it that way or did he not have a flash ready to go at the time? It would definitely not be as striking if he had blasted it. |
