I read the page talking about the SS boot camp but couldn't tell if it was going to be based out of a hotel, possibly the same one as SSA was. Will it be?

Plus like Dan said even with the EXTREME bargain value of the instruction its hard to afford the trip out west twice in one year on a PJ's pay, especially just after moving.
Hope ya'll have a great experience, I'm sure you will and will be thinking of ya while I'm shooting "frantic friday nights" (multiple games, a lot of driving, and a tight deadline)and ESU getting stomped that weekend.

->> I have received numerous emails about the upcoming Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp ...many asking the same question.

The Boot Camp is similar to the 5-day Sports Shooter Academy in that it is based on participants shooting real events and having their worked edited and critiqued with the workshop faculty immediately afterward.

Where the Boot Camp differs is that each of the two days has a specific topic that the workshop will concentrate on. With the upcoming workshop Friday Sept. 5 will be a day-long instruction and shooting devoted to football --- both "American football" and soccer. (Included will be a hands-on remote class on the field prior to the first soccer game the workshop participants will shoot.) On Saturday Sept. 6 the day will be entirely devoted to location lighting and portraits. (Participants will be in small groups photographing subjects set up in various scenarios under the guidance of the faculty. The evening will also have intensive editing and critique sessions with the faculty.)

Yes you can sign up for one OR both of these days.

I came up with the concept of the Boot Camp a couple of years ago because many of you couldn't attend the 5-day workshop or were looking for instruction and inspiration in a specific area of photography.

(After SSA V the overwhelming response to an informal survey was a need for more intensive instruction with location lighting and portraits.)

Yes you can bring your own lighting gear if you want---and we encourage it --- Nikon and Dyna-Lite have gear available for workshop participants to use.

Yes this will be a heck of a lot of fun!!!

So many of you are used to the intensive, 5-day SSA experience that the cool format and wonderful value that the Boot Camp offers seems somewhat overlooked.

If you have any other questions about the Boot Camp --- the format, registration or goals --- please contact me.

Matt and hope to hold another 5-day Sports Shooter Academy sometime in '09.

Mahalo!

The Kahuna.

As with all of The Academy workshops, the "deadline" is when we fill all of the available space. Once all of those spots are filled, I start a waiting list. We usually get a few cancellations, so if you're on the waiting list, chances are you'll probably be a part of this cool workshop.

We have several spots left, so apply sooner ... rather than later!

->> Questions, questions, questions ... I get questions!

Here are answer to the most common questions I have received about the upcoming Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp:

- The Boot Camp is similar to the 5-day Sports Shooter Academy in that this is a SHOOTING workshop, not just classroom lectures.

- No, it is not just for SportsShooter.com members. Any student or working photographer can apply.

- Nikon is the new workshop sponsor and all workshop participants can get loaner equipment to use (yes even Canon shooters). Nikon has indicated they will have D3 and D300 dslr bodies available for participants to check out during the workshop and lenses from 14mm to 600mm. Also SB800 speedlites will be available for the lighting workshop.

- The Orange County-John Wayne Airport is the closest to the workshop headquarters in Irvine. The Long Beach Airport is about 30 miles north.

- Yes workshop faculty members will be at the events we will be shooting and working with participants in groups and one-on-one (unlike other workshops).

- There will be a remote class just prior to the first soccer game on the Saturday schedule. Yes, workshop participants will have the opportunity to put up remotes at the soccer tournament.

- And lastly ... Yes, there are some spots available for both days.

This will be a fun weekend with lots of instruction, great opportunities to make some nice photos and meet photographers and students from all over the country.

->> Okay, I'm going to come out and say it. I'm a little nervous. About getting brainwashed. By Nikon.

I know we are allowed to bring our own gear, and I know Nikon will be there with all of their new bodies and lenses to check out. But all I have ever known is Canon. Being a student and a relatively new shooter, that isn't saying too much, but I've had a nagging question in the back of my head. How different are they really? Is shooting a D3 that different from shooting a mark 3?

I guess part of the predicament is that I'm a full time student, an engineer at that, not a pj. I've saved up my pennies and have gotten a 24-70, 70-200, and 40D over the past few years. But long glass is pretty out of my reach, and unfortunately out of reach for NC State's Student Media budget as well.

Football and soccer can both be pretty long lens sports right? I'm wondering if I will be able to pick up some of this Nikon gear for long glass and just start shooting, or if there will be more of a learning curve. Is there another option short of getting a 300 before the bootcamp? For such a short workshop, I would hate to spend too much time just getting antiquated to the equipment instead of learning skills I can take back with me to better our publications.

Any advice, suggestions, or opinions? Or is my anal paranoia just getting to me?

->> Why not use your own gear during the workshop? There is no "rule" that says you have to use loaner Nikon gear.

When Canon used to support the workshop, the Nikon shooters generally used their own equipment.

Some would "test drive" the Canon gear. But participants feel they should use equipment they were most comfortable with.

And as we say at the Sports Shooter Academy:
IT'S NOT ABOUT THE GEAR!

'Nuff said!

->> ALSO ... As I made note of in your email confirmation: Nikon will have personnel at the hotel and in the field with us to help workshop participants with any equipment questions.

If you do decide to use Nikon gear, there will be plenty of help available.

But if you are using a Canon 40D now, a Nikon D3 or D300 will be a big upgrade in image quality, fps, AF performance and low-light/high iso.

You are getting waaaaay too hung up on equipment! Either way you go, this will be a very big learning experience and lots of fun ... if you put a lot into it.

As I said ... IT'S NOT ABOUT THE GEAR!

Take a look at the best images made from past bootcamps and academys, they mostly aren't done with bread and butter images, but with people seeing something away from that normal bread and butter.

->> Dreier,
If you look at some of the past boot camps you will see that most of the best photos ended up being taken away from the game action. Bert and the guys push the thought of seeing better, shooting different, getting away from the pack. With 30 people at a game showing work, you will quickly see how moving away from the pack and looking for your own vision of the day will hopefully help you make great photos. That being said if you have never used a long lens or a super wide angle this is a great place to experiment.

One another thing... do not be a wall flower. Make sure you introduce yourself to each instructor, ask them questions when can. Listen to what they tell you. Ask the same question to another instructor, listen to that answer and then meld it into something that works for you and the gear you have. Almost everything they teach you can be used once you get home and have to use your gear bag. Do not worry if you do not have remotes. long lenses etc.... learn how to use them in California take that KNOWLEDGE home and then apply it however you can.

Have fun.....
