100 Days to Beijing Olympics: Who's Credentialed And Going?

->> Today marks 100 days from the start of the Beijing Summer Olympic Games.
I wanted to start a thread to find out who is credentialed to cover the games and will be in Beijing?
With staff cutbacks and the general economic downturn in the newspaper industry, I know there are many newspapers that have changed its staffing plans.
So who will be in Beijing this August? |

Once I get a fairly comprehensive list of who's going --- I know several friends that are, but don't ever post on the ss.com message board --- I will start an email list or maybe an online group.

I'll be there as a native English speaking liaison of sorts between BOCOG and photographers at the cycling venues. I'll be arriving in the beginning of July for training so hopefully I can help out with some logistical questions if they come up.

I'll be there--I'm an SS member, but my real job is a cameraman freelancing for the TV networks, and I'll be covering my first Summer Olympics for NBC. I've been to the last three winter Olympics, with CBS in Nagano, and with NBC in Salt Lake and Torino. I've shot athlete profiles for both since the '92 games, so I guess if you want my perspective, then put me down, too.
My role will be with the "Sports/News Desk" and at any time will find myself at any of the venues. It's a pretty good gig in that I'm not attached to any one venue but will be diverse in what I'll be covering. I'll be on the lookout for you among the stills guys.
The cutbacks have affected the TV side as well. In 2000, NBC did 120 profiles prior to the games. This year they will be doing less than 60, and those stories will be shorter than 2 minutes. I just got back from Europe where I shot 2 stories over 6 days--that's travel included. We spent only 1 day with each athlete. In the past it would have been a minimum of 3 days with each. Also, at the games themselves, NBC has cut its staff on location in China by half of what was in Athens, and most of the daily stories will be bulk uplinked to NY for editing.
I was recently at the Final 4 (my 12th year for CBS) and at one point was on the floor and thought I may have seen you, but it was hectic and crazy and didn't get a chance to say hello. If I spot you in China I'll be sure to say hi. |
