->> My Father-in-Law is going to Clearwater Beach, FL for vacation in a few weeks, and I thought those who live there or have been there a lot might be able to give some good retaurant ideas. Maybe a nice steak house for one day, and a good seafood restaurant for another.
Thanks,
John |

->> For steak, drive to Tampa and hit Berns.

For seafood on the beach (Florida style) you can't go wrong with any of the Frenchy's restaurants:

In my opinion, the Rockaway Grill is the best as you can watch the sun set over the gulf. |

->> I found a really cool seafood restaurant when I was in Tampa a couple of years ago. The restaurant is actually in St. Petersburg, and called Fish Tales. The address is 1500 2nd St S, St Petersburg.
It wasn't a fancy restaurant, but the food was excellent, the beers were cold, and the view was great. |

->> A nod goes to Frenchy's Rockaway Grill from me also. Try the Grouper Sandwich with a bowl of She Crab Soup. To die for!
For a little more formal dinner you might try The Lobster Pot at 17814 Gulf Blvd. Redington Shores, a short drive South of Clearwater Beach.

now I could really go for their black bean soup. |

| ->> As a former Tampa resident, I recommend the Salt Rock Cafe in Indian Shores for seafood. It's right on the water. You might want to make reservations; it's very popular. Despite the out-of-towner's affinity for Berns, for steak, a lot of locals prefer Charley's located in Tampa on Cypress Street. Also, don't overlook the terrific Cuban restaurants in the area. Pepin's on 4th street in St. Pete is very good and has wonderful Sangria. The Columbia in Ybor City in Tampa is a great Cuban experience with the best paella in the area and the best ambiance. |

| ->> Might want to check out John's Pass in Madeira Beach. Its not too far from Clearwater, they have a few restaurants. The Friendly Fisherman is one of my favorites. Their clam chowder is really good, and many of their fish options is fresh off the boat. |

| ->> I grew up in Clearwater, Frenchy's is an awesome place. Columbia is great for fine dining, swanky. Also, although it's not Clearwater-specific, but have them try Skyline Chili, it's right on the beach and an Ohio delicacy. Another place in main Clearwater for Pizza is Capogna's Dugout on US60. Making me a little emotional thinking about all my old stomping grounds! Best beach in America. |

->> If he is going to be there for a few days or more, he should try to go up to:
Louis Pappas Riverside Restaurant
10 Dodecanese Blvd
Tarpon Springs (Florida) , 34689
It's about a half hour north of Tampa/Clearwater, off of Rt. 19, I believe.
Tarpon Springs is an old sponge fishing town settled by Greek sponge fishermen and this restaurant reflects that legacy with the best Greek food I've ever had! |

| ->> Skip the Columbia - it's for the tourist. The restaurant (in Ybor) is beautiful, but the food is not the best. For authentic traditional Cuban cuisine, hit La Teresita on Columbus. I grew up in Tampa with a Cuban grandfather, and the roast pork at La Teresita is almost as good as my grandpas.... and they get their bread from La Segunda, to original Cuban bread bakery in Ybor. As a bonus, the place is very inexpensive, and open until midnight most days. If you'd like to enjoy another Tampa tradition, hit Alessi Bakery on Cypress (close to La Teresita). It's a Sicilian bakery that has amazing scachatta (a Sicilian wedding treat that is kind of like cold pizza, but much, much better.) They also have great guava turnovers and other treats. |

->> Louis Pappas restaurant in Tarpon Springs closed down years ago. The Pappas family now owns and operates a group of smaller restaurants around the bay area called Pappas' Market Cafe. Good food on a much (much) smaller scale. Salads are still to die for.
I'll second La Teresita. Not the best service in the world, but the food is authentic and very good. |

| ->> Didn't know about Louis Pappas closing down. I even checked the web prior to posting, to check out the address. I did see the Pappas' Market Cafe sights listed too and I'm sure they're a good bet. Too bad the scale is much smaller. |

->> Always Lenny's for Breakfast, don't let the wait scare ya... most of the others mentioned are good as well. If they follow the lead given here they will eat well on vacation.
