Bridge crashes every time it opens - help?
Kevin Leas, Photographer

->> The title pretty much says it all, I'm afraid. I'm running PS CS3 on a company provided MacBook, and have been doing so with few problems for a few months now. However, all of a sudden Bridge just closes back down every time I try to start it. I get the Mac error message, not the Adobe message, saying that the app has unexpectedly quit. I've shut down, restarted, and frankly I don't know what else to try. Has anyone else had this same problem before?

->> Kevin-
I had a similar problem when I installed CS3 on my Mac at work. More than likely it has something to do with the way Bridge is trying to process image previews. If you go into preferences in Bridge, click on advanced, and the uncheck the top box used for hardware acceleration that may help you. Good luck!

->> Andy - that's one of the problems. I can't go into any settings or preferences in Bridge because it just crashes when I try to start it up. Nothing in the top bar responds when I try clicking for the menus, I can't change the folder selected in the side of the window...I can't do anything!

->> Guys,

If it's just Adobe Bridge that's crashing, then I would recommend trashing the preference files for it. I'm using CS2, but I'm sure it's similar. Here's where they are located:
Macintosh HD>User>Library>Preferences>

Make sure Bridge and Adobe programs are closed and then try trashing the ones that read: com.adobe.bridge.plist & com.adobe.bridge2.plist
Once you do that, try opening Adobe Bridge and see what happens. Hopefully that solves your problems.

Good luck
A Brown

->> Bridge sucks SO bad. Mine crashes every time I use it. This board is replete with my scathing rants on the problems I've had. Adobe just does not care about Bridge. Use Lightroom. But beware of the beta for the new version coming out. Adobe betas have a very bad track record of late.

->> Update - Albert, sadly your suggestion didn't do the trick. Hal, I can't see memory being an issue - seems to me like it would have been buggy from the start, and not fine for months before just all of a sudden dying on me. Phil - these are the company issue computers; I couldn't add Lightroom if I wanted...and believe me, I wouldn't mind trying it. Thanks for trying, guys!

->> New update: fixed?

I won't even pretend to understand why this works, but it did. Each time Bridge crashed, it was always in my "photos" folder - the folder that held all of the assignment folders. I created a "photos2" folder, dragged the entire contents of Photos over to that one, and viola! No more problems. I don't get it, but it works!

If you are using distributed cache, Bridge will create a cache file in each directory it browses. Perhaps that cache file in the original "photos" folder was corrupt.
If the original folder is still intact (read: you copied from photos to photos2 -- not moved), you may be able to determine this by simply pulling the cache file out to the desktop and then attempting to browse the folder with Bridge again. If all goes well, it should create a new cache file in place of the old one and allow Bridge to move forward with browsing the directory.
