Starting a Blog- where to go

->> I have been toying with the idea of starting a blog to post photos, and let some family and friends as well as colleagues know what I'm doing. But I'm not sure where to go and if they will allow you to post slideshows and soundslides multimedia. Any suggestions?

->> The most popular choices for blogs these days seems to be either Blogger (http://www.blogger.com) or Wordpress (http://www.wordpress.com). Both are free. Both come with plenty of instructions and such to help you get started.
I currently use blogger (http://cartasalhogar.blogspot.com) but I'm thinking about switching to Wordpress, mostly for the cleaner look. I think you can set up any template you want with either site, but I haven't had time to look into it.
As for soundslides multimedia--Blogger won't let you do that directly, but if they are already hosted somewhere (e.g. your personal website) you can embed them. You can see a couple examples of how I did that on my blog with the "War Protest V" and "Keeping Portland Weird" entries earlier this month. View the page source code and look for the 'object' and 'embed' tags.
I'm sure Wordpress is similar in that regard, maybe easier. |

As far as soundslides go, there is options to embed images and video, and while you cant embed a soundslide directly you can use the new video exporter function that joe has released that turns your soundslide into a .mov and from there you can put it on your blogspot.
let us know if you have any more questions.

| ->> My 2 cents is to sign up for both and copy paste your posts on both sites simultaneously. I see to get more traffic from search engines on teh blogs I run on blogger. Not so much with wordpress. |

->> I post my blog on both blogger.com
http://theeagleandthefishpond.blogspot.com
and on my MySpace page. I have the blogger one tracked by google analytic which is great. I know how many visits I get and where they are from. |

->> I've been using blogger for the past month and it's quite easy. It's free. It's also pretty easy to put in widgets to customize the blog -- I put in the photoshelter collection widget.
My blog is at
http://shelleyreport.blogspot.com/
As for posting multimedia, I've posted several mp3 files. They work great on a Mac -- when you click on them, they play in quicktime. I store the files in a hidden folder on my own website, and just put a link in the blog to them (blogger makes that part easy). I imagine you could do the same thing with a soundslides show.
One issue, though: When someone clicks on the mp3 links on my blog from a PC, the PC doesn't play the file, but instead asks if you want to download it. It'll play it once it's downloaded. Not to hijack -- it is kind of related -- but does anyone know how to set it up so the mp3 file plays on a PC without requiring a download? Thanks. |

->> If you dont care too much for bells and whistles just create a simple html blog yourself. You can always add text fields and such for comments if you like. Pretty easy to find a tutorial for a questions and comments or ratings system.

->> For a pure photoblog, Pixelpost is a good option:
http://www.pixelpost.org/
You'll need hosting and a domain name, however, so it won't be free. If cost is a driving factor, Blogger or Wordpress are two of the most popular options. |

Both are very easy to use and have options to customize the blog to your preference. |

->> You can try http://www.wordpress.com It's free and is super easy to use. That's how I started, but now loaded the wordpress software (http://www.wordpress.org) onto my own server for increased flexibility and features. The software is free to download.

| ->> You could always upload your multi-media projects to youtube which converts them into flash that you can embed into your blog. If you don't want to do the blog thing, youtube, facebook or even flickr will suffice and you have the added benefit of controlling access to whom you want to see your content. A blog is more of a public thing where you are trying to distribute content to as many people as possible. |

->> One curveball -- do either of these options (Blogger and Wordpress) -- work in China?
If someone were based there, would the Great Firewall block either one? |

->> I can't tell you if Wordpress works in CHina or not, but I suspect it will work wherever you have access to a server and an internet connection. I am speaking of the server based solution. As far as the Wordpress hosted site is concerned, the best way to find out is to start a new blog and have someone in China try to access it for you.

->> I'm starting out with wordpress right now. Not sure about this as my html etc experience is nil, is there a way to keep viewers from downloading images? In playing around with it, seems like I can't lock the image onto the page so someone can't right click or drag/drop. Maybe I'm missing something.
I realize this won't keep someone determined from stealing an image, but it would help. I don't want to go the whole route of putting a watermark on everything, that seems like overkill. |
