High School Photo Contest

->> Hey Everybody, I've been asked to judge a high school photo contest and thought I'd ask the fine photogs on SportsShooter to help out.
Last night, Misty Mac and I plowed through about 200 prints and narrowed it down to what we thought were the best 21 images.
Some prints were done in the dark room, while others were shot on digital and printed at Wallgreen's or where ever. The teacher ask that I be pretty loose when awarding and give a couple first, couple seconds... etc. But he also wanted a Best of Show. That's where you come in.
We've already given the firsts, seconds, thirds and HM... I just thought it'd be cool to ask some other photogs to help pick the Best of Show.
So if you get a spare second or two, take a look at this gallery I made and let me know what your favorite image is. You can just comment or email me the respective file name of the image you like the best (located in the bottom right of each image)
stamey@gmail.com
if you want to leave comments on any of the images... sweet. If not, no big deal.

Thanks! |

Also, they asked you to judge because they value your opinion. Don't taint yours by reading ours. |

->> Wow! ask and you shall receive. Thanks and Keep those votes coming.
Yea, and I'm sorry for the poor "photos of photos" but I had to do this pretty quick. They want the results ASAP.
And I didn't get any information with the photos other than the photographers name. Thats kind of the reason I gave more than one first, second... etc. Hard to judge a still life against a sports action.
I'll post the results after I get some more votes (I've posted this on some other sites as well) |

I wish I could see more detail with #8, it looks very interesting from afar.
#9 is too cliché for me.

->> I'm giving a vote to number 18.
Out of all of them, it looks like it took the most effort and it's the closest to the most usable print.
A lot of the others are tilted horizon snap shots.
After that I'll cast my vote for 17. |

->> In no particular order, 11, 21, 8.
18's background is, to me, distracting and doesn't add to the image.
17 has got to be up there with the other three I listed.
The tilt in 21 makes it interesting to me.
I keep going back to 11...the composition...the girl's heel..I dunno...but something about it catches my eye. |

The guys choose 11, 20 more often (which have attractive women in the photo)
The ladies choose 8 more often

| ->> Given the criteria I am using to judge all the photos (and trying to think of what the student was thinking - tough because my normal thought process is usually around middle school level), I like 16, 19 and 10. There are no moments in any of the photos, but I like those three because the photographer was thinking graphically. Moment, emotion and content will (may) come later to them. |

| ->> And if you want comments specifically, 19 is graphically pleasing and keeps reminding me of the photo of JFK, arms leaning on a desk, head down and backlit. 16 is sort of a take on Mondrian - I like that they saw a pattern and a pattern broken. And 10 is sort of mysterious, but done better than the other with graphic elements and composition. |
