Canon 40D image quality not good?!

->> I've been using my 40D alongside my Mark IIN for a few weeks now and I am finding the 40D to be a little red no matter how I adjust the camera settings. I also found the images to be soft, so I bumped up the sharpness, but now the noise at ISO 1600 looks as bad as the Mark IIN. And the monitor on the back looks cartoon-ish with the over saturation making it near impossible for me to get the color adjusted manually.
Has anyone else had a problem with the 40D image quality? I had heard it was just as good and a little better than the Mark IIN but I'm not finding that to be the case. Any suggestions on how to set it up? Or if I would be better off with the 5D? |

| ->> Heather: I bought a new 40D and all my images were soft. I went to a soccer game and shot with my 20D and the 40D and swithched between a 70-200 2.8, an 24-70 Sigma and a 50 1.4 on both cameras. In everyone the 40D was soft foccusing. I opened the pictures in zoom browser and checked the focusing point . The focusing point was dead on but the pictures were soft and back focusing. Competitve camera gave me a new 40D and the problem was solved solved. Sharp foccusing, great contrast and color. |

| ->> I was thinking that I should send the camera into Canon to have it checked out. Anyone else do that? Have a good description of the problem that got it fixed the first time? |

| ->> Heather...I also found my images to be too red and noisy on my 40D until I set a couple of functions. If you have the Color Space set to sRGB, try changing to Adobe RGB. Set the High ISO Noise Reduction to "On" all the time. And finally change your Picture Style from Standard to Neutral. If you perform this last function, make sure you use Photoshop Unsharp Mask to sharpen all your images. Let me know how this works for you. |

| ->> I had to send the first 2 40D's back for the same issue. The photos were soft and out of focus and the colors looked bland and muted. The 3rd one I got from B and H I got in a kit with a 28-135 hoping to get a totally different serial number and it works fine. I also shoot with a mark IIn and 40D the same as you. I have been using the 40D for basketball playoffs and the photos are great. If you care to look go to http://www.tomsuarez.net and look under sports folder-high school sports-girls basketball- and the Llano Vs La feria and Llano vs West Oso were shot with the 40D. Let me know what you think. |

->> Thank you everyone for all of your help! I will try the different fixes and then send it back to Canon if none of them work.
If any of you know what the serial numbers were of the cameras you were having problems with I would love to compare it to mine.
Thanks! |

->> I have a 40D and it works like a champ. I think I get more keepers with it than I did with the MarkII. I definitely will buy another this spring for a third body.
To eliminate the red in the skin tones change the picture style from standard to neutral. Underexposing by 1 stop, even when shooting in neutral, will increase the red in the skin tones. Also, keep your batteries fresh. I noticed when the batteries get below 1/2 power the AF lags just a bit. |

->> Thank you Larry! I did everything you recommended and the color looks much better. The real test will be this Saturday but it has already made a big improvement.
Thank you!! |

| ->> I'd been having the red-shift problem with my 30D, too. As suggested above, I changed the picture style to neutral this week and shot a couple HS basketball sectionals. It worked like a champ. |

| ->> Heather, I'm glad youfound a work around for your problem, but you really need to send it back to Canon and have them fix the root of the problem. |
