Canon 16-35 2.8 L II Repair cost?
Jim Rosvold, Photographer

->> So, I was shooting an on-ice ceremony in front about about 1200 people when I stepped back into a wet patch of ice and inadvertently became part of the event when I went tumbling down, along with my MKII and 16-35, which came to its final resting spot in three pieces, the lens mount and end cap still on the body, the rest of the lens about a foot away, and the PocketWizard (now shoeless) landed next to that. The body is fine (in fact I just walked over to the bench, grabbed the 70-200, stood a lot further back, and finished the assignment) but the lens is obviously going to the ER. My question is: does anyone have any idea of how much this one is going to set me back? Also, does anyone repair PW's or do I send that to LPA? I suppose I could use this one for strobe control and not have the shoe mount repaired. BTW, Other than my bruised ego, I was uninjured.

For the lens, best off sending it to CPS - gather all the pieces and pray.

Good Luck,

Patrick

->> One more, you could also try Midstate Camera Repair in Rhode Island

They may cost less than CPS.. and are very helpful with great service.

->> Thanks for the input so far. I should have mentioned the lens is already on the way to CPS and that thankfully none of the glass was damaged. It appears to be what I would call a clean break and I was just wondering if someone else has had this happen to them and what it might cost for the repair. I've also found out that I can buy a new shoe mount for the PW and fix it myself for about $10. That's the best thing I've heard all day!

->> Jim: evaluating the cost is almost impossible. When I broke my 16-35, I was sure I had to write it off. However, it cost me only 250$, shipping included. Here was the damage: http://blog.francis.vachon.net/blog/_archives/2005/5/16/864023.html

->> CPS and NPS have a tiered repair system. Light, Moderate and Major. Each comes with a separate, flat-rate cost. It's not done by the part or by the time.

They assess it and your case is in the major category it will be assigned the higher repair cost, if it can be repaired.

As for Pocket Wizards. If it's not the foot you can replace yourself you send it to Mamiya, the North American distributor. UNLESS, you have a custom ID on your units, then they go to LPA.

->> last fall i dropped my mark II with 16-35 and it did what you described, did a nice clean break with the lens going one direction and the lens mount portion of the lens remaining on the camera body, going the opposite direction. repair from CPS was 153.07.
