I also noticed the other day that Rod Mar took 2nd in Sports Portfolio. Even though the names weren't released yet I recognized several of the shots from his updates and blog. |

->> Nice work, buddy...a testament to the pure power of community journalism and to the fact you don't need to be overseas or in a war zone to make compelling and important work as a photojournalist.

->> My ode to Scott Strazzante:
I met Scott the first time when he was touring as Newspaper POY - back in 2001, right? I remember he was wearing a bowling shirt in Seattle. Made me smile. Too cool for school.
Viewing his body of work on the farm with Harlow and Jean was jaw-dropping. It reminded me why I wanted to be a photojournalist. I also saw some things in his style (layered images, subtle moments, tilted horizons, selective focus, NO FLASH - EVER!) that I liked and would try to embrace in my work.
Scott's dedication to quality journalism in his own community was as apparent then as it is now. The second half of the farm story is truly monumental and a slam dunk for Community Awareness. Also check out February's National Geographic, which gave it a nice ride.
What also has impressed me is his love of sports photojournalism. Wonderful moments, quiet intimacy, appreciation for all things sports related. He and Bruce - to name just a couple - have shown what you can do if you toss aside your 400 2.8 and dive in with a wide lens and get to know your athletes.
If you haven't before, check out Scott's prep column for the Chicago Tribune, Heart & Soul:

Right now, he's following a boys basketball team and its coach for the season. In the fall, he shadowed a volleyball team and came up with an impressive edit that really involved thinking outside the box. I love every frame! Here's a link to it in his POYi-winning portfolio:

Scott's a winner without a plaque. But I am happy he has won several times on such a huge stage. If not, maybe I wouldn't have met him in Seattle back in '01 and been so inspired, as were others in attendance. To me, Scott represents what photojournalism is capable of.
Thanks, buddy, for kicking ass and for sharing your killer vision with the masses.
Sol
PS No, Scott did not pay me for this public love letter. Though I would accept a bottle of ice cold Tsingtao this summer in Beijing... |

->> Way to go Scott! Kudos from the other end of the state!
Bouncing from Chip Litherland's comment above, your work shows that there's heartache and drama here in the heartland just as palpable as that in Iraq or Darfur. The trick is to capture it. You have that gift. |
