->> Hi Folks:
Social Chairman Ross Taylor, Emcee Michael Williamson, Contest Chairman Rich Glickstein and I want to invite you to the 2008 Southern Short Course in News Photography. This year it’s going to be held in Charlotte, N.C. from March 27-30 at the Hilton Executive Park, a Four Star hotel that recently completed an eight million dollar renovation.
During the past year I have been improving the educational curriculum while keeping costs at a minimum. While our hotel usually costs about $200/night we have worked out a special rate of just $99/night plus tax that includes free internet, free parking and free airport shuttle to and from Charlotte International Airport (CLT). We have already sold out the first block of rooms but I have secured a second block.
At $95 for professionals and $50 for students, we have lowest registration cost of any national photojournalism seminar. That special price lasts until March 10th which is also the in-hand deadline for our annual photo contest.
The speakers include: Peter Read Miller of Sports Illustrated; Capa War Photograhy Winner Chris Hondros of Getty; Pulitzer Prize and National POY Rick Loomis of the LA Times; Cathaleen Curtis, Director of Photography of AOL; Region 1 POY Preston Gannaway and Pulitzer Nominated finalist Jeff Widener of the Honolulu Advertiser.
We are also proud to announce that Peter Read Miller will be doing a special sports breakout session. More details coming soon.
Please visit our website at http://www.southernshortcourse.com or our Facebook page to find out many more details.
I look forward to seeing you there.

->> Marc- how can you let the fans know about your cool Short Course and not mention that SportsShooter.com Executive Producer and fan-favorite Grover Sanschagrin will also be there speaking? That alone is worth the price of admission!
This looks like a GREAT lineup of speakers. |

Looks like an interesting way to spend spring break.
If anyone else from Mizzou wants to go - shoot me an email - to fly there from St. Louis is $240 on American round trip.
Hopefully I will see you there.

->> Thanks Brad! We're gonna have a great time.
Grover is back by popular demand... lots of folks gave me extremely positive feedback about his presentation last year. This year he shares the stage with Emilie Sommer of NewsWeddingPhotographers.com to talk about making extra money online.
We're having a special Thursday night event in the hotel lobby/bar area for the patrons to meet the faculty. Shawn Rocco of the News & Observer will be shooting portraits which we hope to post to the Fun Pix area.
Patrick: See you there! |

Thanks,

->> Hey Everyone,
Myself and Nick Oza from the Arizona Republic are going to have a room reserved for Wed. Night - Saturday night. We are hoping to get a few more so we can drop the cost of the room. Right now there would be the chair + ottoman available or bring some sleeping bags and a pillow and you could have the floor. Ideally if we could get 2 more people that would be great. Obviously, the more people we can get, the less it would be.
Shoot me an email at fallon.patrick@gmail.com if you are interested. |

->> glad everyone is fired up about this year's shortcourse, it does look terrific...it would, however, be really terrific if the dates were changed back (as they were many many years ago) to not coincide with the NCAA
basketball tourney. takes a whole lot of shooters out of the equation, not only those who are on the road but those who remain behind and are unable to leave because the paper is short staffed. just a suggestion. I hope everyone has a great time. |

Chuck, the simple solution is to cover a team (Florida) that lost eight of their last 11 and failed to make the tourney. Oh well, every team has to rebuild at some point. And we've never won the NIT before... |

The Coffee Cup
It's a little hole in the wall sort of place, fried chicken, collard greens, black eyed peas, biscuits, that sort of thing, great for lunch and breakfast, it's up I-77 from your hotel a few miles, towards downtown, off on a side street. I don't remember the name of the street but it's near the Panthers' football stadium.
Mama Ricotta's
Great Italian food, it's a few miles farther away from your hotel on the outskirts of downtown. |

->> Folks:
I wanted to tell you about a special Saturday breakout session about the future of photojournalism. By and large, photojournalists have many questions with the ever changing plight of the journalism industry. To answer questions we've assembled several editors and a special guest.
"Visuals in journalism: Our common future"
–Moderator: Marc J. Kawanishi, CEO, Southern Short Course in News Photography
Six top editors from differing sizes and kinds of publications talk about the importance of photojournalism and how they intend to grow visual the acumen of their staffs over the next few years. What is the future of photojournalism? With shrinking budgets, news hole and staff, teamwork and commitment are necessary commodities for building a cohesive newsroom. There's a bright side: visually driven story ideas are the new currency of the multi-platform newsroom. A question and answer session will follow. Sponsored by Nikon and East Carolina University.
Panelists:
Rick Thames: Editor of The Charlotte Observer
Hunter Bretzius: Editor of The Gaston Gazette
Paul Osmundson: Editor of The Rock Hill Herald
Ron Stodghill: Editor of Targeted Publications (six glossy magazines)
Bill Bangham: Director of editorial and photography for the International Mission Board |
