->> that's truly sad. I met SG many moons ago while shooting only my second Mexico National Soccer Team game in the U.S. The game was at the Home Depot Center and I was only a sophomore in college. I had the deer-in-the-headlights look, I presume, because Steve stopped what he was doing at the photo room and shook my hand and showed me the ropes.

That's the kind of man he was. A seasoned veteran reaching out the the newbees.

I miss him already.

->> Steve was a good guy and a great roll model. He pulled me aside and gave me a lot of advice when I started out a few years ago as a few others on this site have done.

I learned a lot from him in our time together in the photo wells at Dodger Stadium, at the Riveria Country Club in LA shooting golf, and other places around California and the LA area.

Steve will be greatly missed.

Jeff

->> Thank You Shelly for this information,
This one hurts, Steve was a talented Photographer and fun guy to work next to,

Julio, your words are so true,
"That's the kind of man he was. A seasoned veteran reaching out to the newbees. "

The first time I met Steve, he positioned himself next to me handed me his 400 2.8 and said "you will probably make a better photo with this, and then walked off to continue his work..... he was right.

The second time I bumped into him was several months later at a golf course that I was unfamiliar with, he shouted across the media room "hey you ever shot here before? " I said nope, he said " follow me I've been here a million times I know all the great spots"... he was right again.

The Third time I met Steve, he asked me my name.

All that time he never asked for anything from me, he just wanted to reach out to a newbee.

God be with you my Brotha.

I always looked forward to when the golf tournaments came out my way because I knew Steve would be covering them.

He will be greatly missed.

Every time I saw him after that at an event he always said hello and offered any advice he had.
A great person and photographer.

->> This is truly a shock. I had known Steve for more than twenty years and before that we unknowingly competed for the same photojournalism awards in college while at different schools.

I knew him as a hard worker who loved his job and (as you've heard from so many people) was always there with a helping hand and a kind word. He called me T-Dogg.

I became very close to him (maybe a little more than I wanted to (-:) during the Los Angeles riots several years ago. He knew the streets better than I, so we teamed up and rode together. At one point a carload of gang members pulled up next to us. Steve grabbed me by the neck, told me to get down and forced my head into his lap until the coast was clear. I told him that I'd rather get shot than be seen with my head in his lap. (-: Anyway he and I have been telling that story ever since. I find it hard to believe that he won't be telling it anymore.

So long brother.

->> I am so crushed by this.

We are both Richard Pryor fans and we would have the best times doing all the acts off the albums. Were talking all that great 1970s and 80s stuff. I have nobody to talk about Pryor with anymore. Guess what? Steve got me an autographed Pryor book many years ago and its one of my prized possesions.

So many great times, lots of laughs and we both think Anastasia Myskina is hot. Not easy to find two dudes that think she is hot. Ask me about the time he talked to her at the Acura, what a funny story.

Steve, say high to Richard for me.

->> Wow. I met him at the New Mexico Bowl in 2006. He was walking from University Stadium to his hotel which was 10 miles away. He had his roller bag with equipment so I stopped to ask if he needed a ride. He said he would be all right but I convinced him since it was a rough part of town. He just laughed and said I have been in rougher parts in LA. We eventually found his hotel but he talked to me about his goals and dreams in the brief car ride. From first meeting him I could tell he was driven and accomplished. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends who have lost a great dear friend.

I first met Steve about seven years ago when I was editing with him for WireImage. He always made these great music mixes with obscure hits like "Clap For the Wolfman" and "Convoy." I was right out of college and trying to find a newspaper job and he was always giving encouragement and pushing me to go after my dreams. Steve, thanks for helping me reach my goal. You will be missed.

During a stop in play I look over at him and he's singing Don't Stop Believin' from Journey. The longer the song went on the louder he got. He saw me and the late V.J Lovero staring at him, He just said " this black man likes Journey" and started up again. From that day on every time I hear it I see him going to town on that song in the firstbase well. I will miss him and that warm smile

We were both shooting on the inside of Turn 1 and he struck up a conversation with me. He was very friendly and encouraged me with my photography. The next Cali race is in a few weeks, and I'm sad to know we won't be side by side in the shooting holes of Turn 1.
