->> David, ever since the Cagwins left the farm, I had planned on going back to document the subdivision. I had hoped to find one family to do a long term story on and eventually publish a book with the first half being the farm family and the second half being the subdivision one. In my mind, I imagined a suburban family with a set of cow salt and pepper shakers but no other connection to the Cagwins.
For almost five years I found excuses not to go.
Finally, I met Amanda, the mom, when I talked to her photo class at a local community college.
When I started shooting the Grabenhofers, I still thought it would be a straight forward documentary project but when I shot the photo of the two boys wrestling in the grass, I was reminded of Harlow rolling in the grass with the calf.
After I made that initial connection in my brain, it has come pretty easily.

->> Scott,

What an amazing project. Fantastic and at times sad to see the changes over just a few years. Loved the contrast and the amazing foresight you had, intentional or subconsciously, to photograph the earlier images you did. Thanks for sharing.

Reminded me of two Colorado area projects. One was a grandfather (Joseph Collier) and great-great-grandson (Grant Collier) photographed Colorado from the same perspectives 130 years apart. There's another by photographer Johsn Fielder, who did a similar book (same basic lenses, perspective, even same rocks in foreground!) in 2000 that photographer William Henry Jackson captured in 1870. Made for a great book, think yours would as well.

Cool to see the amazing changes in a shorter time, and what is happening to farms in Illinois and throughout the heartland.
