Bulk slide scanning

->> At my day job, we're looking at scanning a bunch of old slides - probably around 500 by the look of things.
I'm interested in recommendations for a company that does this kind of service.
A Google search brought up a couple companies so I'd like some help with who does the best job. Price really isn't a problem.
I checked the message board archives and found only a similar question posted two years ago with no responses so I hope there are a few folks out there who can help me out.
Thanks |

->> John, I'm not sure on what pricing goes for on the sites you googled, but you may just want to end up buying a nikon cool scan and the bulk loading device. It may cost you about the same, and at least you wont have to send the slides out to be scanned. A lot of places I've seen for scanning have been anywhere from .75-2.50 per slide to be scanned.
that's anywhere from 375-1250 bucks, yeah I know a huge price deviation, but it all depends on the quality of scan you are looking for.
I say spend that 5-700 dollars it's probably going to cost you and buy a slide scanner. Nikon Coolscan V is around 600 dollars, and wil probably resell for around 500-550.
Good luck,
-Andrew |

->> John,
I use a Nikon LS-4000 with the bulk slide feed attachment (SF-210). I think its capacity is around 50 slides per tray. So your 500 slide job needs to be loaded 10 times.
The process goes very smoothly, just pop them in the infeed tray and they end up in the outfeed tray in just a short while. You can leave the feeder unattended while the batch is being processed.
I think the SF-210 cost me around $350.00 new.
It's a very easy process to set up.
Cheers...

->> I have heard good things about ScanCafe, with slide scans costing $.24 at 3000 dpi. Here is food for thought from their site, based on a theoretical job 8x the size of yours:
"If you have more than 4,000 slides, you should use ScanCafe as well, unless of course you have A LOT of free time. For instance, it takes at least 4 minutes to scan and color correct each slide. For 4,000 slides, it will take you 16,000 minutes or 267+ hours non-stop. If you work every Saturday for five hours non-stop to scan your images, it will take you over one year to complete the job."

->> Thanks for the help.
We have an LS-2000 Coolscan that we haven't had a reason to use in quite a while so I thought it might be better to outsource the job than buy a feeder we'd only use once or twice. And since the CEO is the one who wants this done, pricing won't be an issue.
I'll check out these companies. |

->> Speaking of scanners...anyone familiar with the PowerSlide 3650 film scanner?
I did a google search and this one came up, as well as others, but I had never heard of them before.
Thanks,
