Nikon D3 vs. Canon 1D Mark III
Josh Lehrer, Student/Intern, Photographer
Rochester | NY | USA | Posted: 4:03 AM on 12.07.07
->> Well, finally got my hands on a D3, so I did some tests vs. my Canon 1D Mark III...shot the same target, same light, Nikon D3 with 28-70mm and Canon Mark III with 24-70mm, at 70mm, high ISO NR off on both cameras, long exposure NR on on both cameras, F16, various shutter speeds.

I don't have a means to post all these files online, but since no one has yet offered a real comparison of these two cameras on here yet, I will be happy to send anyone a zip file of any samples they want, I shot images at all of the varying ISOs. This was only a test of ISO performance and overall IQ.

Just figured I would let people know this, since I have yet to see it around the forums.

Bottom line: Mk 3, a tad sharper, D3, about 1/3 stop edge in noise, but probably due to more in-camera blurring regardless of settings, at least IMHO.

->> Wow...someone using 'Mk III' and 'sharp' in the same sentence. I'd like to see more testing. I don't have access to a D3, so please post something (or feel free to send me an email) if you do some side-by-side comparisons at f2.8, especially on the wide end of the zoom range. I was able to use the new Nikon 24-70 on a D300 in my local camera store. Based on my highly un-scientific 'shoot stuff in the store and chimp' method, the Nikon 24-70 seemed to be MUCH sharper than the Canon at 24mm.

->> The Nikon 28-70 isn't really the sharpest lens in the world in my experience... If you want a more even comparison, try the 14-24 or 24-70 that Matt mentioned if you're able to get your hands on either. My guess is you'll see a world of difference.

->> Not getting paid by Canon...yet! I wasn't sure about the 28-70, but I used it to match the 24-70 I own for the Mark III. In the future I will do more testing with fixed glass.

My terminology was definitely not entirely technical, but that isn't why I posted this thread...I had the opportunity to test the cameras side by side and wanted to offer up the files (which I will be getting to soon).

Both camera's are sweet regardless though, so I'd say in the end it's a win-win for all photographers.

->> You are very welcome. I was pretty excited to finally get my hands on the D3...I am a Canon guy but love new toys regardless. And I had yet to see a solid comparison out there at all the ISO's of the same test target.

SS has done so much for me, this is the least I could do. If anyone has any other questions regarding these files please don't hesitate to ask.

It looks like both Canon and Nikon users are getting an early Christmas gift from the camera manufacturers in terms of quality. Randy

->> Thanks, Josh. It's very nice of you to do this. As a former Nikon shooter (19 years!) I knew Nikon would eventually respond to Canon's FF & High ISO dominance. The D3 seems to be a great camera. I too have a 1D mkIII and I love it. Based on your test files, I think the two cameras are very very close in performance. Progress is good for everyone! I wonder if Nikon users will petition Nikon to begin making the 28mm f1.4 again. Cheers.
