OT: I lost my friend
Jeff Stanton, Photographer
Tucson | Az | USA | Posted: 8:29 PM on 12.03.07
->> This is off topic, but I feel the need to share this with the SS.com community, because although it is geared toward the business of photography, it's also an online community of concerned, dedicated and compassionate people.

My first greyhound, Charlie, the one you see in the avator on my posts and member page, was shot and killed on Friday night here in Tucson. The police have no leads and no witnesses have come forward. My newspaper, the Tucson Citizen, will be running a story with photos about the incident in Tuesday's paper.

There are some sketchy details at this time, but we do know he, along with my other two dogs, were taken out for a walk on Friday night when he walked away from the area he was in. We do not know if he was shot at that location or if he wandered to a nearby area. My other two greyhounds, Bella and Gypsy are safe and sound.

A passerby motorist apparently spotted him laying on the side of the road on a bridge and he stopped to see what the situation was. The police showed up and took a report. The officer noticed gunshot wounds on Charlie.

At first, we thought he was shot and ran away and into the path of oncoming traffic. However, the officer is disputing that theory and I have to agree at this point as there were no visible signs on his body of the kind of trauma an automobile or truck would cause when striking an animal at 40 mph.

So the police at this point believe he may have died from the wounds or possibly suffered a heart attack as a result of the experience. We don't know. On Friday night, I telephoned a friend who lives nearby and her and I went to the bridge to retrieve his remains.

We transported him to a vet clinic where my friend is employed and before placing him in a freezer until we could move him during the day on Saturday, I documented his injuries.

Folks, this by far was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. My feeling was if I didn't do this, it may not get done. We're talking about the weekend and a lot of people don't consider the death of an animal a pressing matter. Well, people like me do. And I know there are members on this site who also do.

I turned over the images to the Tucson police and they are calling it a felony animal cruelty case. A reward is being offered by Arizona Greyhound Rescue and along with the story to be published tomorrow, we are hoping it will shake the bushes. Something interesting might fall out.

I know there have been several members here who have lost their pets and it's always difficult to hear about this. But I want you to know, when it happens the way I just described, its even harder to imagine how someone could do this to an innocent animal. Pure evil.

Yes, he was a dog. He was my dog. My friend. My pal. I'll always love him and cherish his memory. See you at the Rainbow Bridge, Char.

Thanks for reading this, everyone.

Its hard for me to imagine why someone would do such a thing to our pets.

All they ask from us humans are food/water and love. And sometimes they can supply their own food.(my cats)

I rushed him to the animal hospital, but when the doctor checked him, his internal damage was too great. I've had a few dogs since then, but I lost the best (non-human) friend I have ever had. I had a void in my life until the birth of my children. I feel your pain my brother. David has some real nice suggestions. Good luck, Rodrigo

Some folks think this is silly, but those people have never known the love of a great dog, or have never let themselves be loved by a great dog, and it certainly sounds like Charlie was a great dog.

Give Bella and Gypsy more hugs than normal now, 'cuz they've also lost one of their family.

I am so so terribly sorry for your tragic loss. I am crying here in NYC.
There's a place in hell for whoever did this, and not soon enough. HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO MEAN???
The folks at rainsbowbridge helped me so much when my beloved Max died (he is on my Avatar) 4 years ago. Not a day has gone by where I do not think about him, talk to him, and miss him so. He was more than a cat to me. Like Charlie, he was my friend, my family. I pity those people out there who do not understand what the love for, and from, a pet truly is.
Jeff..PLEASE take care of yourself at this time. I was so depressed over Max's death that I got so sick...a really bad case of pneumonia and I was sick for 4 months.
My heart is with you and your family, including your other 2 greyhounds. Greyhound owners are a special kind.

->> Everyone, I have an update on this situation. It clears up a lot and it also even begs more questions. Here it is.

I have learned who the motorist was who spotted Charlie in the road. Sometime around 11 p.m., Friday, this gentleman and his friend they left the an apartment near where Charlie was found, east over the bridge on their way to the Safeway store.

I called both these gentlemen tonight and both said there was nothing on the bridge near that 11 p.m.hour when they left.
However, on the way back from Safeway, coming over the bridge, Charlie was laying in the middle of the road. They passed by and thought it was a coyote and decided to stop and move it to the side of the road.

When they reached him, they discovered it was a greyhound. They thought it was somebody's pet because he looked like he was taken care of and he had all his identification tags and license. Since he was laying in the road and traffic was still coming, they decided to move him to the side and over the guard rail so they would be out of the road.

Both of these guys said it did not look to them that Charlie had been struck by a car and now, I would tend to agree with them. He did not appear to have the kind of trauma associated with being hit by a vehicle traveling 40 mph over that bridge.

They also told me it didn't appear he had any broken legs and that he was pretty much in tact, just like he was laying down, not mangled or anything.

Charlie had some brusing on his chest and some scrapes on his legs. Both guys noticed the gunshot wounds to his legs.

But, what they told me next is what set me back in my chair.

They both told me it appeared Charlie had a gunshot wound to the head. Both admitted they're not experts and it was raining too, but they said that's what it looked like.

I did not notice this when I took his photos at the vet clinic later on. He was hard to move because riga was setting in. We did turn him over and I did
photograph his head, but whether that was the side I needed to be looking at is unclear. But it makes sense.

Also, both of these guys have a theory that Charlie may have been mistaken for a coyote and shot by someone. They then discoverd he is a dog and they drove him up on the bridge and dump him out to make it look like he was possibly hit. That could explain his bruises and scrapes. Just a theory though.

When I lived in PA and NJ I would occassionally see foxes (and was amazed at how small they were) but they seemed more scared of me than I was of them. I would never think of shooting an animal unless it came at me ready to attack and it was do or die.
It doesn't seem to be "people" who are kind..having shot him 3x.
I hope they rot in hell.

The story hit the paper today and before 10 a.m. this morning, I received a call from KVOA News 4 who wanted to do their own story for the 5 p.m. broadcast.

I met them at the dog park where I take my surviving greyhounds and of course I took Charlie there. They did an interview, shot video of my other dogs and I submitted to them a CD with three images of Charlie so they could use them.

I felt sort of uneasy at first being on the other side of the camera. I'm not a publicity hound. My aim is clearly to get this out to as many people as possible. Maybe, just maybe someone saw something, heard something, knows something - anything to get some new information into the hand of authorities.

->> This (sadly) reminds me of a moment where I was coming home (over a bridge) and I had to swerve to miss a rather large mound no the road.

We pulled over to investigate, and it was a very very large dog (large, as in muscular). It was still breathing, just, and was bleeding from its mouth. We instantly thought this was the work of a car crash, but then saw puncture wounds around its neck, chest and legs.

We called a Vet but no one wanted to come as it wasn't our dog, we didn't want to go near the dog as they can turn unpredictable when injured like this and could possibly bite us. We called the SPCA (animal rescue) who took a long time to come, in the meantime vechiles were pulling up, stopping, looking at me in disgust like I had just hit the dog, then speeding off (many checking the front of my car as they disappeared).

When the SPCA van arrived, the dog had since spluttered its last breath and the guy started to put it in a body bag. He thought it was very suspicious with the way the dog was, the injuries it had and the position it was on the road and we came to the sad conclusion. The dog was obviously second best in a dog fight and the owner didn't want to, or couldn't afford to get the dog looked at by a vet and dumped him on the road.

The reward will probably work becuase the guilty party won't have known that this would have become a news story and probably bragged to someone about doing it. Once two people know, word spreads and someone who knows the guy and doesn't like him will turn him in.

Five years with Charlie shall leave you with a lifetime of memories. I know, I still remember every January 21 that it was the day my dog Gyspy died, in 1969 and almost 40 years later I still feel that sadness.

Thanks for the link. I only hope and pray that someone comes forward and that the case is solved.

As I sit here typing this, my big black cat Lucky is sitting next to me.(We found him, almost dead in freezing weather as a very small kitten. He had been eating worms to survive. AMAZING what a good vet and $300 in premium cat food will do -this cat is a BIG alpha male kinda guy now - and he's the first pet I've actually owned in 40 years.) I know how I would feel if something were to happen to him.

I only hope the warm memories replace the pain and anguish sooner than later because what happened just sucks.

->> Condolences, man.

If you browse around this board for a very short time, you will see the faces of many loyal dogs and cats in avatars. It's always struck me that perhaps there is something in the composition of a photographer's heart that makes them drawn to "man's best friend". The truly unconditional love and loyalty of a good dog is irreplaceable.

My nephew's Weimaraner was hit by a large truck and dragged under it for some distance. She had most of one side of her face torn off. On the same weekend this happened, my bro-in-law, nephew's dad, had a bad stroke and was in ICU, near death. I was the one who found Lauren, the Weim, and took her to the vet. When I took her in, the vet's receptionist suggested that it would be too expensive to "fix" her and that I should consider putting her down. I explained that this decision wasn't about dollars, that I didn't care what it might cost, if she can be saved, just do it. The vet did an amazing job, and she has a large scar, but she has since had a litter of puppies with my dog Polo and is a wonderful, loving dog. Whenever I see her with my nephew, I wonder how that receptionist could have suggested what she did. I suppose some people just don't "get it".

Anyway, I hope the scum who did this to Charlie are found and locked up. A special place in hell is waiting for them.

->> Hey gang,
No new updates to report in the shooting death of Charlie. I have learned the reward fund started by Arizona Greyhound Rescue has grown rapidly over the last few days and hopefully there will be a substantial amount to offer anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those involved.

I know that had it not been for the support of the SS.com community, things would have been more difficult. But I learned I had a lot of friends here and there are a lot of caring people I didn't even know on this site that sent emails to me and I even had some phone calls as well. Thank you to all who have been there for me and especially for Charlie.

The police told me on Wednesday there would be nothing they would do unless they had a suspect or a witness they could speak with. I have also spoken with the officer who was at the scene and the two passerbys that discovered him in the road. Now it's up to me and I'm ready.

We plan to canvas the complex on Saturday and hand out fliers and speak with whoever will listen to us in hopes of learning some new information. We know somebody knows something and my grief and despair is now turning to determination and resolve.

->> Jeff,

Any dog owner would tell you that loosing a dog is like loosing a member of your family. Whether by old age, disease, bad luck, or in this case, murder, it is always difficult. Your post choked me up when I read it. I wish you the best in recovering from your loss.

Ben

->> Hey gang, No news to report. We placed fliers in all the laundry rooms at the apartment complex and we talked to a few people, not many. We've had so much rain that it has set back our efforts to find out what happened. We may never learn the truth. I am feeling better and once again, thank you to everyone for your emails, phone calls and concern. If I learn of anything new, I will update this thread.
