What to shoot around Orange County CA
John Plassenthal, Photographer
Vandalia | OH | USA | Posted: 1:26 PM on 11.30.07
->> I'm going to be in Orange County for a few days next week and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for things to shoot. Talking with a few folks I know who've been there the only suggestions I've gotten so far is Griffith Park and the beaches/piers other than the normal touristy sites you see on the bus tours.

Any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

->> Surfing @ Huntington Beach is pretty cool. If you have a 300mm, you are golden, but a 70-200 is sufficient. The breaks are pretty close to the pier and not far off shore.

->> A drive on the hwy 241 toll road from Yorba Linda to Irvine passes through the area affected by the recent Santiago fire. The hills there offer nice opportunities in the Spring when the wild mustard is in bloom, but the year-round attraction is the view of Southwestern OC from the southbound lanes. There are a couple of places where you can turn off the highway and get some good shots. The view includes the hugh blimp hangars that were once a part of a Marine Corp. helicopter base, John Wayne Airport, across the water to Catalina Island if the clouds cooperate, all the way to the Palisades Peninsula. Further North the view includes Angel Stadium, The Pond, Disneyland, etc. Since you are basically facing west, the sunsets can be gorgeous.

In L.A., the Getty museum is awesome.

The L.A. Zoo is so-so, but the San Diego Zoo is world class. Plenty of museums close by, and lots of naval activity, both civilian and military.

->> Agreed with Jody; The blimp hangers are a must, you won't see those everyday.

Laguna Beach, the whole world travels to see Laguna Beach. (and Laguna Canyon)

The Christmas Tree at Fashion Island in Newport Beach (if you like that type of thing)

Huntington Beach Pier (at least as it is now), one of the birth places of surfing.

The old county courthouse in downtown Santa Ana. Site of many a movie shoot.

The Discovery Science Museum in Santa Ana has a giant cube and 85 ft Boeing Delta III Rocket outside. And also a Space Shuttle mock up.

The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana is beautiful.

The Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade (depending on when you are there and when it starts in a couple of weeks I think)

Dana Point Harbor (Richard Henry Dana "Two Years Before The Mast" 1840)

San Juan Capistrano and the Mission

You can Google all of these.

I could keep going...

I shot some "engagement session" stuff around the Getty museum, and I took a day a few years back to shoot the Wedge for fun. Nothing like seeing someone have a wave give out from under them and the look on their face in recognition of their imminent 15 plus foot drop..

But seriously, there is lots to see in the OC. From Sunset Beach to the San Diego county line we have lots of beaches and coastal towns along the way. There is Knotts Berry Farm, Disneyland, Harbor boat parades, Lots and Lots of shopping malls, Tons of Traffic.. you will learn about the 405 while you are here. Hopefully the weather will stay nice and the sunsets stay colorful. Enjoy your visit! Cheers, *Shelly*

"The Real Housewives of Orange County" is filmed inside Coto De Caza..... and unless you have a visitor pass, you can't get into the gated community... Besides, I don't think they're filming right now.......

As for places to see/ shoot-

Santiago canyon/ Modjeska canyon are great hikes, and provide some amazing views... That being said, I'm not too sure how accessable they are right now, with some of the closures this weekend from the rains, (albeit temporary) and all of the fire damage in the area. you may want to check
http://www.ocfa.org

so far, lots of good suggestions, but you may consider adding the San Diego Wild Animal park to the list.

Not sure what you intend to see, or want to photograph, but the list could be sooo long, it would take days to complete.

One more idea... why not take some of your gear [if you are a Canon shooter] to Canon right there in Irvine for a sensor cleaning, new weather rings, etc.. they will do it while you wait [about an hr. or so too :)] and would save you some shipping, etc..

->> Thanks to all of your for your suggestions. Since I didn't have much time to sightsee it really helped to focus the time I had for my first trip to California.

I'd been watching surf reports for a few months seeing nothing in the way of swells and got lucky since the biggest ocean swell in 2 years hit in my window for surfing photos. Having never shot surfing before I wasn't expecting too much. I started up the Pacific Coast Highway and stopped at a couple places I saw along the way. I ran into an old surfer at Crystal Cove who spent about a half hour giving me a crash course in what to look for and suggestions on where to look. I'd originally intended to head to the Wedge, but this guy said it was only good surfing during a summer swell when the waves were headed the other direction. The places he sent me to had dozens of surfers.

I was amazed at how thick the polution hung over LA. I'd heard it had gotten better and it looked worse than any photo I'd ever seen.

In any case a sample of what I came home with is up at:

->> John,

As for the pollution... I would not be surprised if it was pretty bad, we have not had a lot of rainfall recently and all of those fires really do cause the sky to get pretty icky.

P.S. Thanks for the images of home :)
