Paying For Internet Access

| ->> I recently was at Ford Field in Detroit and very surprised to find the news media had to pay for internet access. The last time I was there they supplied the access free (two years ago). Is this becoming the standard? The cost was $30 for the day which I thought was out of line. How many of you are finding that stadiums, pro or collage are charging for this? And what are they charging? |

| ->> Thanks for the link. I just wanted to get more of a feel of what, if anything, people are paying at different stadiums. |

->> I don't know for USA, but around Europe it depends on organizer. Tour de France has paid internet access for a while (sorry I forgot price). For last 2 years or so, paid internet access is normal thing on alpine skiing World Cups in Austria (normally it's around 20eur/day), while lot of other events, including alpine skiing World Cups out of Austria, and other skiing World Cups (ski jumping, xc skiing, biathlon etc.) in Austria for example, has free of charge internet access.
But obviously paid internet access is slowly becoming reality. I guess with lower prices for our work every new day, we can easily afford this. |

| ->> you should remember that before the internet you had to pay to have a phone line installed so you could transmit. At bowl games and events like that - 200-300 dollars was not unusual. |

| ->> with mobile broadband internet via your cell phone carrier, I highly doubt this stuff will last long. Soon noone will ever need internet access provided by the venue. Just hook your cell phone up to your computer. |

| ->> Bastian I agree, but at least around here (Slovenia), current upload speed isn't anywhere close even to extremely slow wifi/ethernet access in press centers. Download is normally fine, but that's not what we normally need :) |

->> Douglas,
On the MotoGP circuit one has to pay for internet access (usually somewhere around 60 euro's for the three day weekend) the exception being the MotoGP round at Laguna Seca where they didn't charge for it.
On the good old AMA circuit as of yet, access is still free.

->> I'm headed up to Ford Field on Sunday to shoot the Chiefs losing again. How do you pay for the wireless access? Via credit card? Through the Lions PR department? And is there a photo workroom for all to share?
Thanks for any info, I haven't shot in Ford Field before, only the PuffyDome.

->> Hey Doug,
I certainly understand the concern of this as "one" may have this cost on a regular basis, but also it's my own belief that news media organizations shouldn't have to pay for online access especially when dealing with large corporate sponsored industries that roll in the dough and so why should they have to charge. Is it to pay for the bill or set-up costs? Give us a break here as we are helping to promote their business and have for decades in which I feel we are part of their success.
Anyway, sorry for going off subject, but I deceided to bypass all of the little or sometimes big problems associated with who knows what will materialize next time you're on the road and need internet access. Or even if you're not charged, but the still photographers workroom is overflowing, or there are too many folks draining the server, or you're in a rural area where there isn't anything available but land lines, you see what I am saying. I now have a plan with Verizon for a wireless airport card and love it. Anywhere I can receive a cell phone siginal I can get online and it hasn't failed yet. I think it's wise to have a back-up plan if not making this your own plan of action. |

->> David,
You can pay by credit card. Just launch your browser and a web page will pop up to instruct you on how to sign in.
Ford Field and the Detroit Lions are separate organizations. The Ford Field contact for internet is Mark Woloszyn 313-262-2354. I needed to contact him to get a receipt. |
