->> Ill echo Kevin's comments in the guide. Its probably one of the darkest arenas in the state. Its pretty old so there are limited events there (some big band competitions, prep playoffs and a few boxing matches). Beware of the turf pebbles if you are on the "field".
good luck! |

Since I covered the first football game there (a Dallas Cowboys vs. Houston Oilers preseason scrimmage) and the first few Alamo Bowls I guess then I'm "pretty old" as well?
An aside on the lighting there. At the aforementioned first football game when the still photographers starting arriving we complained the lighting was too dark and the arena folks said they had no more lights to turn on.
Then the TV broadcast crew came out and said it was too dark but was told no more lights were available.
Then the officiating crew walked out on the field, looked up and asked for more lights to be turned on. Now, when things are too dark for human eyes it's prety darn dark.
Things didn't improve much over the years of the first few Alamo Bowls. |

->> I'll echo everyone else...dark minus a stop!
In the past the North endzone has been as much as a stop brighter since that was the end the Spurs played on when they played in the dome. So as a result those lights were changed regularly.
The dome is NOT horrible if you have been shooting HS football all season. But it is pretty bad if you are used to Div. I collegiate or pro games.
In the past I have tried to let everyone know where to go for media stuff, but it seems to change every year..so I won't attempt it this year.
I will say that last year rosters were hard to find during the HS playoffs and the wireless internet connection (which I think we all were pirating) was turned off shortly after the games. So come prepared...

->> I shot high school football in the Alamodome a few days ago. My camera settings were ISO 2500, 1/640 @ f/2.8. I was using a Mark IV and the photos looked fine. It's not going to be so good on a Mark II though.
They were charging $25 for wifi so I used my own air card instead. There's plenty of room to work in the press box. Good luck! |
