Evidence of my Existence

->> If you're looking for a great book to read, pick up a copy of Jim Lo Scalzo's new memoir, Evidence of my Existence. Lo Scalzo is a staff photographer at U.S. News & World Report and, as you'll discover in this book, is a great writer.
Anyone who aspires to travel the world as a photojournalist should read this book. It is at times a laugh-out-loud read and at-times a sobering account of the personal pitfalls of leading this kind of life. It is also a good book for students as Jim details how he got access to some very closed groups of American society––the Mennonites, the Navajao Nation, and the porn industry (really). |

I thought that US News laid-off their staff and was working strictly with freelancers.

->> Pete -
Just as a point of clarification: working on the outskirts of the Navajo Nation for nearly 11 years I have to say it is far from a closed group in our society. Now the Hopis and the Acomas, they are. Navajos? I rarely have access issues on the reservation - I actually have more problems with the city cops here in town.
Sure, there are some people that do not want to be photographed, and they sometimes will claim for religious beliefs - but there is no prohibition of making images on the Navajo reservation unless the subject specifically opposes you taking images. Sometimes people will say that I can't take their photo because it will steal their soul, and then they will either wink or chuckle about it.
Many of the Navajo people have a very interesting sense of humor that takes some time to get used to.
