So he says: "How much for a Press Pass?"
Jason Hirschfeld, Photographer, Photo Editor
Norfolk | VA | U.S. | Posted: 11:13 PM on 11.06.07
->> I was shooting a Football game Saturday and this gentleman walks up to me and says: "How much do one of those Press Passes cost for an NFL game"...

I was dumbfounded, so I had no worthy response.

I'm interested to hear what your comeback(s) would've been???

"Members of the working media request a media credentials that include photo credentials, reporters credentials, etc. from the team, there is no charge"

Or did you really mean "what smart a** response can I use next time?"

:)

That would be truthful at least.. :-)

"If you're willing to hand over all your rights to your work, and never be legally be able to say you took 'the winning photograph', because it's owned by a media conglomerate who is the actual author, then, it's pretty much free. If, on the other hand, you're willing to put in the time necessary to become among the best at this, and in turn, you are rewarded with amazing images that you are proud of, and which move people to really see and understand the sport, and make people feel like they were there, well, then, the value of this press pass is priceless."

I would be willing to wager that most people who are not working photographers or friends and family of people who are have no idea how the credentialing process works.

Taking that a step further, these same people probably think that we all have a universal "Press Pass" which gains us immediate and unquestioned access to any event at any time and without any prior arrangements.

Although these assumptions do not match reality, they are perfectly reasonable beliefs from a cultural standpoint. The "press pass in the hat-band" portrayal of working photographers in various forms of entertainment may be a cliche, but it has created some widely held yet false beliefs about the existence of a universal Press Pass.

I would love to know how much money IFPO has brought in as a result of this widely held notion.

->> How is that a completely unreasonable question. Can't you purchase a "Pit Pass" to Nascar?

Why should the general public know the working of the credentialing process?

People think that a "press pass" actually does something anyway. Most people assume that if you have a thing called a press pass that it's actually gets you somewhere...little do "they" know that any official on the scene of where ever you try to actually use a press pass can kick you out using any one of a thousand reasons they want to make up on the spot. When in actuality holding a press pass usually does little more than identify you as a member of the press...but you're still subject to the whims of the officials on the scene whether it really will get you anywhere.

....waits for inevitable "huh"....

->> Dave and Michael,

You both are right on. Sometimes things that are unreasonable to those on the inside is a completely legitimate question for those on the outside. Being rude and coming back with a smart a** response to people is what earns you a grand reputation. I know it can become very annoying hearing the same questions over and over like, "I bet that lens was expensive." or, "how much did that camera cost?" But how you respond to these folks says a lot about the person you are and you just never know who you are talking to.

In response to these types of questions I like coming back with something funny or off the cuff then let them know the truth. I just don't like being a smart a** as that shines a bad light on all photographers.

Speaking of IFPO, I looked them up and they're still around! Amazing that an outfit like that can still be around making money. I bet there run by the same Nigerian guys who contacted me last night because of the fortune I inherited-I just need to send them the difference in cash.

Judging from my e-mails, I bet I have more rich Nigerian friends than you do!! They even refer to me as "Dear Beloved" or "My Beloved Friend"..

Seriously, I'm amazed at the stuff I get. The ones that really have me scratching my head are the Winning UK Lottery notifications sent by some Nigerian sounding name from a Japan ISP.. I get a lot of e-mails that have the ending .jp or require me to download a special character set just to read the message.. Those go in my trash can quickest!!

He seemed confused, but I said that if anybody ever learned that I was selling my press pass, I would immediately be fired. My name would be trash in the photoj community within a matter of days, making it near impossible for me to ever work at a newspaper again.

Cricket Australia is reported to be asking up to $10000 for creds

This is a disgrace, but has been caused by past agencies selling images outside of the news or media realm (i.e commercial)

I know to the average American cricket looks like a strange sport, but just remember it is the major summer sport enjoyed by 1.5 billion people around the world.
And to the 1.2 billion people of India and Pakistan their love of cricket borders on obsession.
If this major sport can get away with charging $5000 to $10000 for editorial use for local newspapers and the wires, how long do think it will take before the NBA, MLB, NFL start charging Newspapers and wires in the USA?

I read your thread - it is big news, and does have significant global ramifications. Perhaps you should have titled the thread "High Schools charging for photographer access" to generate a little more interest?
Perhaps a little facetious of me, but I think a few SS members outside of the US feel like our work isn't always regarded as relevant here.
